ummm according to qld law it can only stick out so much....youd have to check with nsw law to see the regulations/limits but i also think you can hide it with a bulge but only to a certain height the driver can still see or something like that

In Vic no physical part of the engine can protrude from the bonnet, only covered by a scoop which must not be higher than a certain height: A cylinder of 165mm in diameter must be able to roll over the highest part of the scoop without "wedging" or hinderance, that would mean the scoop can be no higher than about 80mm's.

Details on legal mods here:

in wa its no moving part above the bonnet eg butterflys , linkages , belts , pullys so on and still have a height restrictions
but you can get a permit (like for hotrods)but then you can only drive bout two to three months of the year or some thing

As Big Pete said, in NSW the height restriction is 8cm.I found out the hard way when I did a conversion on a XF and put a shaker on it and as I was running a different manifold and had a spacer on the carby, when I took it for the engineers certificate it was knocked back for being 14mm too high :

With what engine? I know a few cars which are "100% legal" when fitted with totally different components that the car normally runs.

ADR26 (no pollution gear) or earlier will give the least grief as there's no pollution gear requirements, loose emissions regs as well as higher noise limits, that means 1973 XB or earlier.
If you go strictly by the law id say you can only have a shaker on an XYGT too.

And even if it's all legal, think of the grief the police would give you.

thats anouther hang up in wa i was going to blow a 51 cleavland in an old pre polution vehical but when i checked out bout licencing they told me that it was going to have to pass polution standards of bassicaly today

hence as my signiture says im blowing a 5.4 ba moter now for the old fairlane , it will be easyer to do emissions and polution with injection (even simpler if i wanted to run gas , but i dont)

Even under bonnet blowers need engineers should meet EPA requirements, too much hassle IMO.

Basically NAH

if you want go then lpg and turbo blow through or lpg injection , it's not too hard , if you want blown then a legal bonnet scoop and run lpg injection , run petrol if you want but who can afford it ? and lpg has a beeter calorific value so will run more boost with out detonation , it all needs engineering and fi you meet the deck height requirements in Qld ( I cant find the mods book sorry) which is quite loc ( disk of a size run over the bonnet) you need to meet edge laws with sealing of the engine bay .. its a oin although I am tempted to stick a bug catcher through the bonnet of the '48
