Default VCT going *CLUNK*

My beautiful XR6 is playing up again. :(

When slowing down quite a violent clunk, clunk, clunk has developed. I have recently had the diff checked and have always changed the diff oil regularly. I have also recently had both rear bearings replaced.

The car is booked in with Wignall Ford Frankston on Thursday to get it sorted out, but I was wondering what else could be the cause of the problem?

I have been so nice to the car, I have recently got custom plates 'XR6VCT' but she continues to give me grief!

All help greatly appreciated!

Where does the sound appear to be coming from? Is it only when you are on the brakes or when you are off the throttle?

Bit of info and we should be able to point you in the right direction I think

The sound is coming from the rear, the right hand side I think. It happens both when on and off the throttle, but particularly when slowing down, anything under 50k's and she gets quite vocal!

I'd check
a) wheel nuts are tight (and yes, its pretty common) and
b) Caliper bolts are tight.
Other than that it could be the wheel bearing letting the axle move (to too common on the IRS) or even a CV joint on its way out.

Yeh the first thing I did was check the wheel nuts, there seems to be a few AU guys with wheel nut issues lately.

I will make sure the guys at Wignall Ford Frankston check the CV joint and the caliper bolts.

Thanks for the help Casper.

I know that there is an additive that is supposed to be added to the diff oil (part number is in service handbook). Was that included in your last diff oil change?

Hi hot xr6, yes I have made sure the additive has been used when the car has been serviced. I had a few problems with the diff in my old EF XR6 and the diff additive fixed it straight away, since then i've always made sure the additive has been used when the car has been serviced.

Just this morning I've had my AU ute (solid axle) in at a diff specialist for almost exactly this same reason ... when slowing down, as the auto changed gears I get a violent/noisey clunk from each downshift. Upshifts and normal driving are fine. The diff guys advised me that the noise isn't actually the diff, but is mostly likely the auto (?), and the noise is being amplified by the driveshaft. So later today it goes off to the auto specialists!? :(

My case is different to you as I have a one-piece driveshaft and solid axle diff, but you might need to check all options ..

Good luck!
