Try:

Budget
Avis
Thrifty
Hertz
Europcar
Abel
Airport Car Hire

That should get you started but do a google or yellow pages search. You will find Hyundai Getz for around $25-$30, Corolla for around $30-$40, Camry for around $40-$50, Falc/Comm for $50-$60 and some older cars for around $30.

Add about $10/day if you are picking up from the airport, add ~$22/day for reduced premium and add around $20/day for satnav.

If you pick a really busy time, add 50% to the prices above.

Hope that helps..... I hire a LOT of cars lol.

Hey Chris! Dont get a Camry - they are the 4 cyl auto jobbies which are complete rubbish, we hired one. They "upgraded" us to that, from the manual Corolla we had booked... Hmmmm.

If you have Frequent Flyer points I think you can get Hertz cheaper (I think).

Have fun in Qld!!!!

Just be VERY carefull who you do hire on from and make sure they inspect the car before you hand it back or you could get a nasty surprise on your next credit card bill.

FWIW we hired one from Thrifty in Sufferers Paradise and have only good things to say about that branch.

I'm checking that out, I spend about 20 weeks a year in a hire car and I had no idea about that insurance option. Thanks!

Often there is some excess coverage, but check the policy - it may or may not cover the full excess.

Pedro, I called ANZ and the people I spoke to knew nothing about this policy. Can you tell me who to call or how you got it?

If you are a member of the RAA (RACQ, RACV and other motoring associations), then some car rental places will give you discount. Hell, we even got discount at Hertz in the USA on car rental for being a member of the RAA!

Didn't even realise I already had this cover with my ANZ Visa! Thanks for making me look into it.

ANZ Car Rental Cover

With ANZ Car Rental Cover you can feel confident when you’re on the road in a rental car, with peace of mind and great value. As an ANZ Gold cardholder you’re automatically covered by ANZ Car Rental Cover when you hire a car from a major rental company.

ANZ Car Rental Cover helps making hiring a rental car more affordable by reducing your excess if you have a covered accident in a car hired by you. Most car rental companies generally charge around $20 to $30 per day per car hired for this type of insurance. Without this cover, your excess for damage to a rental car in the event of an accident could be around $2,000 to $4,000. ANZ Car Rental Cover can reduce this excess down to $350, and can pay up to a maximum of $2,050.

Hunt around, for a little bit more each day, go topless in style. If you are on holidays, have some fun, these cars dont look like tourist cars either.

Try http://www.zoomtogo.com
We hired a Corolla in Tassie for 20 days, and the total cost was $830.00 thru Avis.
When I say Corolla, I really mean Hyundai Elantra. Was s'posed to get a Corolla, but they gave us an "upgrade". More like downgrade. Biggest POS ever! :gren:
