Air Intake Drilled?

A friend of mine said that its possible to drill a hole in the Air intake Right below the Filter box (i think he said a filter box)

Is this possible or is it a **** idea?
Any tips on this would be good.

Its possible.. but your ABS gear is under there so you have to be VERY careful with the placement of the hole.

If you're trying to get more air into the system, begin with a Tickford snorkle (if you haven't already got 1) then try the extra intake at the front of the airbox to pick up air flow from beneath the headlight. Unless this hole you refer to is for some other purpose?? Conduct a search on these here forums, there's a few articles regarding air intake mods. Note: if you're running duel fuel, too much air is not always a good thing. :

He basically said its better For AirFlow And it Gives the Engine more of a grunt type sound.

He's done it with an EA Falcon. AU Falcon And a ST Mondeo.

From all reports, the grunt sound can be achieved with a "pod filter" although in both my vehicles, I can't hear it (must be the insulation & exhaust).
Personally I think you will achieve satisfactory results with a pod & a Tickford snorkle, however, hanging one's head out the window whilst driving to hear said noise is not recommended!

I thought the abs stuff was relocated to under the hood near the battery in the AU's? Is there stuff in the passenger wheel well too?

I'll have to consult my photo's but from memory there is a charcol cannister in the LH front wheel area as well as a bunch of vacuum lines, & brake lines. But yes the main ABS unit is located behind the battery.

If you are going to drill holes in your chassis why don't you pull off the wheel arch trim and see for yourself what is in there...

does he mean drill a hole in the actual filter box or through the chassis as TWISTEDEL said

I would cut the whole front of the airbox off, it made a differance to my car and also a EF I6.

I've cut the front of the airbox out on my AU. Here's a tip, DON'T USE AN ANGLE GRINDER. Trust me on that one, bad bad idea...lots of burning hand bits.

How hard is that to do red?

Easy as, took me 5 minutes max and I always say the more air the better. I was using a hacksaw for the first 30 seconds but then got impatient. The angle grinder did end up doing a good clean job of it though...
You could always go the big buck way (as I will be soon) and go for the G&D airbox.

i used a hole saw and cut a hole through box then the guard.Then ran a 2 3/4 hose to front of bumper. seems to have made it go better but couldnt be assed putting on dyno cause dont have k&n filter yet.. didnt have any problem with rail or canister.
