Since owning the EL for about 2 years now i ended up getting an EF intake with lid from the wreckers for $40. Anyway i have noticed both bellmouths in the airbox lid have an internal diameter of roughly 55mm. The EF trumpet inside the lid goes from 80mm to 55mm and the EL/AU lid goes from about 75mm to 55mm.
Why did ford designers go with the 55mm internal diameter? does this give better low down torque compared with 80mm openings? I know the intake pipe length does matter but why the small opening? cheers.......... |

I do believe it was primarly done for NVH. However a belmouth opening is far more efficent than the equivelent open end. AU XR8 boxes will have an aluminium 70mm bellmouth in them iirc.

It's to make the Windsor drivers not feel so bad about having a 55mm MAF ;)
