Default boot covers(ed)...?

hey guys,

2day i attempted to 'custom' sound deadend my boot with expandable foam, works pretty well but i made a pretty big mess of it. do any of the e series(ea-eb or ef-l if it would fit)come with a boot cover or something, or has anyone put a board(mdf?) across the boot and carpeted/painted it before?

also just a tip for anyone who wants to but hasnt used expandable foam, read the instuctions... wear gloves, and have plenty dry cloth around to clean up and remember its called 'expandable' for a reason....

thx

Do you mean like a peice of timber over the entire floor of the boot? if so heaps of people do it, but make it themselves for the audio install. or if you want new carpet try a carpet moulding company.

P.s got any pics?

Its not hard to do..

Use cardboard and make a stencil.. then transfer it to mdf.. i used 6mm but most people use 3mm.. drill holes in various spots around the frame being careful not to drill through your bootlid.. then use xmas tree clips or similar to fasten the mdf to the bootlid.. carpet or paint or vinyl or wateva..

See.. Nice and simple..

Cheers,
Nik

Yer i did sound deaden it and the bootlid a fair bit but i still get rattles.. xmas tree clips are hard to describe.. very common in cars.. they are the little clips that just push in and pull out..

Sort of look like this:

Heres my custom made boot lid cover:

Its 3mm thick MDF covered in black carpet. It takes a bit of measuring and cutting and marking and more cutting to get the shape, but be patient and you'll have it looking neat.

As you can see I carpeted the plastic cover so it's all matching and neat.

but an ef/el and use the fairmont cover lol. nah, its easy enough to make your own. when i had my VH, i mad my own parcel shelf, bootlid cover, boot and door trimmings. plus, when you go to buy the wood. do what i do and buy a top or bottom sheet. they discount them coz they usually have scuff marks and stuff, but your gonna cover it anyway so who cares what it looks like

I'm sure you have a tape measure so just measure it yourself. Just allow enough carpet to overlap the edges. I got the carpet from Clark Rubber for $30 which gave me 2 metres x 1 metre. I think you can get carpet from bunnings too. Have a look around because theres different colours and plushs to choose from.

Get the MDF from either bunnings or home hardware. Make sure its 3mm thick. Any thicker and its starting to get a bit too heavy. No one can help you over the forums for cutting this out. Just take your basic measurements and slowly work it all in.

And yes the christmas tree clips work a treat. I used the extra long ones that hold in the plastics behind the rear seats that cover the top of the shockers. Measure the thickness of the stem of the clip and find the correct drill bit. When drilling the holes into the MDF and into the boot make sure its small enough so that the clip is really tight.

Another hint, when carpeting carpet a good distance behind the board. Then put a bit of carpet down the centre of the boot lid, the part that comes out like the edges. This is to stop the board rattling.

As for the glue, I used Bond Grip I think its called. I got it from Clark Rubber anyway. Just ask the guy at Clark Rubber or Bunnings etc for what to use.

mate im not to sure what you mean here but if your talking about sound deadening with expandable foam, this is what I would do again if I could.

1.Tape off the areas with masking tape that you dont want to get mess over
2.Get plenty of dry cloth/rags whatever your not going to need to use again.
3.Have something on-hand to scarp larger amounts of foam off
4.GET SOME GLOVES!
5.Now aim the gun at the holes of your boot lid where ever the two pieces of metal come together
6.Hold the trigger about HALF way down so you can control the flow of the foam and try and point it in the hard to reach places.
7. Only try and fill the gaps half way up with foam beacuse it will expand.
8. Every few holes you fill get ready to scrap away the excess that comes through the holes.
9.Clean any bits you dont want to get dirty with a dry cloth and put the cloth to one side so it doesn't get over you or your boot.
10.Once your done keep and eye on everything and make sure you watch your boot for the next 30 mins or so.

This is obviously done with the boot lid off

ONE THING I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH IS CLEAN ANY AREAS YOU DON'T WANT ANY EXPANDABLE FOAM ON YOUR BOOT LID, FLOOR, TABLE ETC. IMMEDIATELY. THIS STUFF WONT COME OFF ONCE ITS SET.

AND IF YOU READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE CAN, DON'T USE ACETONE/NAIL POLISH REMOVER ON YOUR BOOT BECAUSE THEY ARE PAINT STRIPPER PRODUCTS UNLESS YOU ARE GOING TO PUT A CUSTOM LID COVER ON.
