Firstly let’s get some facts straight.

Smokers = Drug addicts. They are addicted to Nicotine and require a regular hit.
Only stupid people smoke (I was once)

Any smoker who enjoys smoking are lying to themselves and know it. If you enjoy something it must be good, so you should also teach your friends, family and children about this "enjoyable" pastime you have and get them hooked. I bet you won't.

Only 19% of the population are smokers, yet they affect 100% of the population. Either by making us breathe their filth or by being a health burden on family, work and healthcare.

Once you know how, smoking is not difficult to quit, you just need to WANT to quit. The old saying goes: "NOBODY HAS EVER DIED FROM QUITTING SMOKING, BUT MANY DIE FROM NOT QUITTING".

For all the holier than now smokers, I only have one thing to say:
You are stupid and you stink.
You summed it up nicely. Very hard to argue with you here. Not that I would try. Well done.

nothing worse then dying from someone elses smoke! luckily my car has no exhaust fumes, factories dont dump any toxins into the environment, Adelaide water is as pure as the driven snow, the city doesnt have a brown smog layer sitting across it and I've just recently sewn my sphyncter shut so I cant fart anymore.

Get some perspective.

Uranium_death - good post!! Ill certainly keep the smoke out of your way (always have, just dont bug me when im standing outside, away from buildings, like many people who go out of their way to walk past me so they can put on their best fake cough and give me daggers!)

Oh... and try to keep that disgusting fresh air to yourself
How do you think they " triage " people on the waiting lists for transplants ?
Overall health issues are taken into consideration when those decisions are made. Another example..smokers and insurance rates for health and disability policies. Don't expect a cheaper policy if you admit to being a smoker.

Why stop at smoking? Let's ban everything that's bad for you, a waste of money in someone else's eyes, ever hurt somebody, cost the government money (hang on, isn't that the exact reason we pay taxes?) or is flat out not needed. Fast food, alcohol, cars with engines bigger than 700cc, gambling, knifes, swimming pools, TV, the internet, the list goes on!

As much as I hate smoking, I'd rather suck on a deck a day than have someone tell me how to live every aspect of my life, which is what half the people in here are suggesting.

Big red writing is very constructive.... Not.

Smokes hate to be told not to smoke. These ad's do absolutley nothing. The only people I know who have quit did it because they wanted to, no patches no deadline. Just stopped. It's the only way. If a smoker gives up for any other reason, they will resent that reason.

I personally hate the smell, it's the worst thing that people can do to themselves, but smokers don't care.

I smoke and its something im working on stopping but when you get that craving it can be quite over whelming .
Whining people dont help me at all its like there in the same club as the ones who say my car is to loud or its to old and should be in the tip, dont do this dont do that blah blah blah.
i wont smoke if its going to annoy others, unless there tossers and deserve it

Yes the original post asked about the new smoking ads, not who can get on the highest horse and preach.

By any measure people should be helped to stop smoking. Australians in general hate being told what to do, so what are governments(our elected representitives) to do when faced with this dilemma?

The government(on our behalf) have to change community thinking/standards.

None of the stop smoking ads say "you must give up smoking" or "smoking should be ban". They all try to educate about the dangers and try and remove the image of smoking being; harmless, cool, a bit rebellious and all the other images tobacco companies have tried so hard to invent and maintain through various media over time.

There is a shift in thinking about smoking in the community. But these things take time. Drink driving was not illegal at one time in Australia. People complained about being told to stop drink driving, "I know my limits or I havn't killed anyone yet!". And of course people still do it, but community standards have changed over time regarding drink driving.

Not so many years ago violence in marital relationships was "nobody elses business". Community attitudes had to change before laws could be brought in. It's impossible to imagine a man claiming a right to beat or rape his wife, community standards have changed that much.

Not suggesting smokers are like wife beaters (they are much worse lol).

I support the ad campain and any efforts to help people stop smoking. Referances to the costs to the community are only to get the "economic rationalists" on side. I'd honestly hate for anyone to go through a serious illness or die when it could so easily be avoided.

we drink, we eat fast food, we breathe polluted air and drink alcohol, we drive too fast and we work too long, we drink too much coffee, we stay up too late, we eat too much red meat and we dont call our mother anymore.

Oh and 19% of those above apparently smoke too. Let he who is without Mcdonalds, cast the first touma.

It's hard to really make an accurate comment in relation to an issue that you've never really been stuck with. I suffer weak lungs due to asthma and any time I've ever tried cigarette's all it does is make me feel sick.

Unfortunately, I believe the main problem at this stage is that the worst part about smoking is what it does to what is around you. I find it rather unprofessional to watch fellow staff members and so forth take cigarette breaks and come back into the office absolutely stinking of it. It's unpleasant for myself and other non smokers, not to mention unprofessional when approaching clients.

I find it disappointing that whilst watching a movie, my friends have to excuse themselves for a cigarette and can't hold off for just that 30-60 minutes extra.

Having never been addicted to something along the lines of a drug it's hard to understand how cravings and all that work, so it's quite easy for me to say "pfft, how is it hard to over come it?" but I don't. My issue does not lie with what it does to your health, but what it does to your overall outlook. From making yourself smell, having bad breath, always needing to excuse yourself from things, the costs involved and those type of things.

I think every effort to should be put in place to stop smoking from happening, it's just my initial reasoning for this doesn't coincide with what the government is trying to do.

Getting back to the subject of cigarette adverts, my current favourite is the one where the cigarette is potrayed as a test tube with ammonia, nail polish remover, tar, cyanide, etc bubbling/steaming inside it. Why do I love this advert? The way that sunlight from the window plays over the yonug actress' boobies...

So when the doctor says "I'm sorry our worst fears have been confirmed about your health".

You can look him in the eye and say, "yes, but I bet you have eaten at Mcdonalds before doc!"

Or I'm I getting this whole "there are worse things you could do"," no one is perfect" analogy all wrong?

Totally wrong infact. Lets look at it the other way. So when you go to the doc obese with heart problems, or you get diagnosed with diabeties, youre going to say "yeah but I didnt smoke".

I dont even see where you got the idea for telling the doc he has eaten maccas before though?

People burning off also start fires and put hazardous smoke into the atmosphere, lets ban that too.

Sure cigarette butts cant start fires (by accident), but I think that's stretching the anti-smoking campaign a little too far.. Dad's a fire investigator and he's seen a lot more stupid ways of starting a fire.

Oh wait - that would include me :

And to those non and ex smokers (not all of you of course, but you know who you are) - it may seem hard to believe but yes, most of us are aware that it is bad for us and don't need to have it rammed down our throats at EVERY single opportunity. But hey, better keep telling us hey........

Personally speaking, i smoke outside - no matter where I am (except the pub - where smoking is allowed)!!!!

Your example doesn't judge, criticise or bait smokers at all?

Baiting smokers may be an exhibition sport at the next olympics.
