I wouldn't mind knowing if it's true that the last of the ELs had AU motors.

I have a 98 model EL...I'm dead sure that's the last cos AUs came out in 98

the motor is a mix between EL and AU, hence there known as hybrids.
they have an EL bottom end and AU head.

History 101

In January 1998, the 'hybrid' six was introduced to allow the early conversion of many of the Geelong machine lines to AU specifications. Externally the engines were identical to the earlier EL Falcon engine however featured full AU specification blocks as well as the AU's low inertia valve train.

Unfortunately this did not extend to the AU's head, head studs or head gasket so these engines are still subject to head gasket failure.

This change did however involve changing the normally parallel valve springs to the newer conical AU items requiring new tools when servicing.

The valve stem seal was also redesigned in these engines to accommodate the thinner stem of the inlet and exhaust valves. Included in the redesign was a new installation specification for the valve stem seal.

The block change necessitated a special crankshaft to be made, with large main bearings to suite the AU block and EL size big ends to allow the EL spec conrods still to be used.

The crankshaft can be identified by the letters 'VR' cast into it verses 'WR' which signifies a full AU spec crankshaft.

Great info Rmack!

I believe one must be very careful when installing an aftermarket cam in the '98 EL sixes.

Do the hybrid motors have a greater power figure then that of the non-hybrid motors?

I believe the EL and the AU Series 1 both have the same power.

157kW @ 4900 rpm.
357Nm @ 3000 rpm.

In future, please post your enquiry in only one thread. I have merged the 2 here. I'd suggest using the search facility for information on Pacemakers.

For interest's sake, whilst AU power figures were the same, I believe the torque curve was improved slightly.

Well, I got my cam. It was said that it would work for my hybrid motor, wrong cam, almost bent a valve.

As a result I am going EF head. Easier to change around heads than have my car off the road with damaged pistons / valves lol

You have to be very carful the people you talk to know exactly whats going on. Some can be easily confused on this issue lol

Cheers,

Ben

Well then mine must be a full AU motor then as well?
Mine was one of the last to roll off the line.

I think that 'tighe' do cams to suit the hybrid motors....Don't quote me on that though...

Is there an actual date from which the hybrids were produced to look for on the build plate?

I think the ELs fitted with the "hybrid" engine also had a black painted engine bay, and had an unpainted rocker cover or something like that
