Dad's fairmont is having the standard MDC death atm, display is fading on one side.
Im 99% sure I know the answer to this, they dont just have bulbs behind the screens do they? Its been replaced under warranty back when the car was 6 months old, but Im just trying to work out if we have to go the full replacement route with it or if I can just rip it out and put a new bulb in. So is there a bulb behind it or is it stuffed?

There are bulbs behind them. If it's only fading on one side that'll be it I'd say, since there's 2 big bulbs for the main display.

Austin, to get the unit out...
pop the black plastic surround around the clock off using a small flat blade screw driver. usea phillips head to undo the screw behind the cover you just popped off. then just wiggle the unit til it comes out. undo the 2 looms. then use a pair of needle nose pliers to take out the bulbs. same as in the dash cluster. fitting is reverse.

To prevent damaging anything, I use a business card to slip in behind the clock surround and press the toggle in. The cardboard can't scratch my lovely raindrops finish, whereas a screwdriver could ;) Apart from that HLC hit the nail on the head. Left side comes out first, right side will follow. Cheers
