How's this for a first car?

My birthdays in July and I want to get a crappy manual to learn in so I can get my manuals license.

I'm looking for something around $200-$300.

It won't be my main car since by july (when I get my P's) I'll sell it or scrap it and get a E series.

Problem is I need to learn in something manual and I want my E series to be an auto (I want a manuals license so I'm not ever restricted later on).

Also with insurance and rego can I transfer them over to my new car?

It'll also be good for me to learn how to service and mantain cars since if I screw it up it's not such a great loss.

do what i did.
i took 1 week of lessons in a manual car beacause we dont own a manual. then i went and got my license.
if you are already a confident driver in an auto a few lessons with an instructor in a manual could be enough.

I aint that great at driving yet.

I've only done around 8hrs driving but I find it extremely easy. I'm just not as smooth a driver as my parents but I'm getting better every trip.

I was thinking of lessons I'll ring up a few people.

I was looking for a maunual E series but I can't find any on ebay.

So something like that laser could do since it's so cheap.

Says it blows smoke though what would cause that?

thats exactly what I did. Both parents didn't own a manual, had about 6 lessons and then went for the license. Too easy.

twas funny. i got in the instructors car for my first lesson. 1 week before my birthday.
i said. this time next week i want my license.
he just looked at me funny and said rito.

it was with excel drive. the ones that pay for you to re sit your test if you fail.
the day of my test he said. i cant offer you that option as i dont believe you are ready and i dont think you will pass. but try and prove me wrong.
and BAM i showed him whos boss :P

Trust me you may feel like you know how to drive but try get as many hours in as you can with your parents, at least 30-60min a week. Anyone can turn a wheel and push some pedals but learning how to read the traffic and how a car reacts in certain situations only comes with experience.

As for the car even if you spend $200-300 on it your looking at another $500 for rego and say $800 for RWC (new brake discs/pads etc). Your $300 cars turned into $1500 car before you even hit the road, then add insurance on top of that.

I would do one of the following....

1. Buy a decent e-series manual now that you will continue to drive on your P's.
2. Get lessons in a manual car then once you have a licence get whatever car, transmission you want.

I had never driven a manual car before did 5 lessons with an instructor and pass first time.

As FRDXR6 said. Its gunna cost more than you realise to get it roadworthy especially if its an old car. If you dont know what your doing most likely you will have to pay a mechanic and the cost will just go up and up. Try find somethin for around $2000 mark. That will get you an EA/EB in decent condition.

Also just go for some lessons. They will help a great deal as most instructors know what you need for your licence test especially if you have only done 8 hours. You may think your ok but once you get out on your own and come to something unfamilier it can be very dangerous

Could do what i did buy a 1982 Meteor, for $450 with rego get a shonky RWC adn just get as much driving out it as you can, then you have the option of turning into a bush/paddock bomb, or selling it on, like i did for $450 no RWC and stripped stereo system..............

no its not illegal but it is very stupid you need it incase you hit someone else and if you havent had much experence then there is a high possiblity of this so get atleast 3rd party

i have a question for you all. say i go for my p's on auto and get it. then i when i turn 20 my circumstances change and i HAVE to drive a manual car can i just go for a manual when i am 20 or i have to wait till im off my p's

i beleive you can go back and re do it for manual.

my brother had a good job lined up until they realized he didn't have a manual license and said they couldent wait for him to get it so bad luck.

They wouldn't be able to stop you going for a manual licence, just means you probably incur same costs as you already paid for the auto licence. Wonder if you would have to do re-do the hazard perceptions test...

you can resit the test in a manual whenever you want here in vic. if you fail the manual one and have an auto, you dont lose your auto licence.
