Default Anyone have a career working in a bank?

Hi,

Does anyone here on the forums have a career in banking?

Does it basically start with having a degree in banking?

Thanks

Greg

depends what you want to do. if you want to be a teller just rock up. if you want to be higher up a degree in commerce, business or financial administration is handy

I guess im in the banking industry, but i dont actually work for a bank. 3 and a half years now... but slowly diverting more towards insurance risk... Yes, degree in banking and finance.

Teller seems to be a good foot in the door, but banking degree is probably "overqualified" for transactional retail banking.... perhaps would be a good part time job as you were studying?

Most senior managers i know from banking institutions had some exposure to retail and commercial lending in the early days. But... was a different ball game back then, they didnt have computer models approving and rejecting loans lol.

what does that leave?
Lending administration
Credit control
Asset and liability management
Risk management
Compliance
Internal Audit
Wealth management

The list goes on....

I'm currently contracted to one of the big banks in an IT governance role and regularly do consulting work in the IT area for the 2 big banks based in Melbourne as well as a few smaller financial services organisations.

I work in insurance for a bank. I dont have a degree but I have worked my way up through the ranks and am now fairly high up.

I started in the call centre for 2 years but hey you gotta start somewhere.

Look at your options, either study for 3-4 years and not earn a whole lot or start off low on about 35K a year and work upwards.

it is good to see us bankers have time to post up on the forums, when we are at work.

Won’t name the Bank in case the Boss is watching but I have been with the same Bank for 22 years.

For my qualifications (none) I would struggle to find a better paying job working “9 – 5” . The days of starting as teller and working your way up are now a thing of the past. If you have a degree then there are numerous opportunities open to you.

Being a Banker is a lot more than being a teller and lending money. I would say that the majority of people that work in my Bank have never been a teller or lent a cent.

I am in a fairly specialised field ( Corporate Insolvency ) and I love it now, but there have been times where I have felt like throwing it in and trying something else.

Cheers

Brad

Left the bank many moons ago. However, it was the best job I've ever had, relaxed, didn't deal with customers, wore old clothes to work, 2 hour lunches, 1/2 hour morning teas etc... Head Office of CBA in Sydney, Martin Place.

Had many jobs since, none have been better than that.

those of you wanting to get out of current jobs might want to consider trading for your income. Hours are good, work is easy 10 til 4, and I'm proof, you don't need to be that schmart either.

Hey Jac - we should swap for a few weeks and we can scare our respective co-workers! I was a bit upset today and one of the guys told his boss I was scary! Your lot need a dose of me and mine will be relieved of the break. I know you're getting it in the neck at the moment but hang in there - you might be running the show in a few years. There's grief in any job - even if you work for yourself!

Talk tomorrow.

Cheers

So if you want to beat em, ya gotta join em, and being manual makes the time even more credible.
