Default Escort MkII 1.6 + 2L Weber *help*

Hi,
I have a MkII Escort 1.6 and bought a 2L weber for it. After fitting the engine started blowing heaps of white smoke. Did the timing and tuned the carby but nothing seems to help. With the stock carby back on the smoke stops. Have been told I might need to 'jet the weber down' for a 1.6. Can anyone solve my problem?

Default weber

correction: in better light the smoke is brown/black and it is also spitting what appears to be fuel out of the exhaust. Obviously it is running real rich but I have leaned it off as far as I can, what else can I do?

Am now running it full lean, the brown smoke is gone but has been replaced by what appears to be oil smoke. This does not happen with stock carby though. Anyone had this happen to them?

Definiately soulnds like it is running REALLY rich...

You will need to rejet to gain optimum performance, but the standard 2lt jetting would not be this bad - do you know the history of the carb?

First things first - rekit and clean the carb paying particular attention the the jets and passage ways - write down the numbers stamped on all of the jets and the emulsion tubes - make sure they all go back into their original places, the Primary and Secondary air correctors, idle jets and possibly mains will be different sizes.

Check the float level - if too high you will be drawing fuel from the mains at idle - setting instruction attached.

Check your idle speed screw - if too high you will be drawing fuel from the progression holes and leaning out the idle mixture screw will have little effect. Wind it out until it does not contact the lever, then wind in 1 full turn.

Wind in the mixture screw until it lightly seats, then wind out 1 - 1.5 turns, it should start and run.

What is it doing at idle now?

Take it for a run - pay attention tho the following -

at 60kph cruise - what does it feel like - surging, bogging down, backfiring?

Do the same for 80kph and 100kph.

Let me know the outcome and the numbers on your jets and emulsion tubes - should be able to work out a base line setting to get you running...

Cheers
