yep great to have an open topic without it getting off track.
One thing though I'd like to say, how about for a change we applaud a government making a good decision, ofcourse it won't pan out perfectly but this helps greatly.
High Media Focus is great value as well, heck it's a start.

Comments like "Oh I forgot it's election year ?!" why always so synical how about just "thank goodness someone pulled their finger out regardless of the time.

Trouble with that is I do not know if it is a good decision... For example this practice has been going on for god only knows how long because it is cultural. How will grog restrictions stop it? How will having every child under 15 subjected to an invasive medical checkup help? Even if they have found the child has been interferred with then how does this help them? Will they be removed for their environment> to be placed where? Would a court of law accept the word of a child in evidence? If they say they have only recently 'discovered' this practice then how come more community consultation was not made? If they did know of the practice prior then why didn't they send in these resources back then?

There are lots of unanswered questions for me and I can only say it is policy being made on the run.

Has been and will be for a while. They have arranged "marriages" like some other cultures and age will go out the window in some cases.

Was thinking exactly the same thing, if that is then it doesn't matter where the child ends up, aslong as it isn't there.

At the end of the day, if they have nothing to hide then the medical checks will do nothing but assure the parents are doing a good job...

oh but wait a second they arn't!

Not new at all and unfortunatly it is usually done by the elders or the uncle. Does not make it right but unfortunatly it is done by those that in 'normal' circumstances you would go to for help. It is also known to happen in 'dry' communities. So just removing the grog is not going to do anything (for the kids).

There was a news story on the local news here in the Alice tonight. It showed the police and officials arriving into a community near Ayres rock. They interviewed an old woman standing there in front of a trashed house. All she would say is "give us money, give is money"

This is one of the problems with the communities out here. They get too much for free.

For this whole thread, I've thought you lived in NT because the thread title is "How lucky are we?" which to me implied "how unlucky is MO". Then you said "aren't you glad you don't live in the territory" which made me think "geez, MO really hates this new rule". A victim of reading things that just weren't there I guess!

I did wonder about your "location" though :togo:

I personally don't see why they should recieve any handouts whatsoever - it is only spent on grog and cigerettes. Get a job or live off the land. I support the JH plan (though am skeptical about the reasons behind...cough...election...cough), but Labour would only increase handouts, pat them on the back and tell em how great they are.

Oh and if you need to buy more than 1 bottle of alcohol a day, you have a problem.
