Exclamation Warning from police re: phone fraud

G'day all, not sure what to make of it but it was e-mailed to me. Might be worth keeping in mind.
Cheers, Jack

----

Warning from Victoria Police--this is NO JOKE!

Please ensure you read this and pass on This has been confirmed by Telstra: DO NOT push 90# on your home phone.I got a call last night from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service technician who was conducting a test on our telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9),zero(0), hash (#) and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which allows them to place long distance telephone calls billed to your home phone number. I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many of the local gaols/prisons.DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. PLEASE pass this on to your friends. If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organisations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass this on.

State Crime Squads Level 12, 412 St. Kilda Road,

Testing service numbers all begin with 1272 and AT&T dont have any alocated to them... on a second look we dont even have AT&T in australia... and if we do they do not have ANY of the phone numbers allocated to them that a phone company uses.

Not to worry then. :P

You have to wonder why someone would bother making it up. It was sent to my lawyer uncle by a client.

Do you really think that A vic cop would start of his letter with an emotionally charged "THIS IS NO JOKE" or "PLEASE, dont push this nuber for ANYONE!"

People who make this shit up never consider that their best wording never ever sounds "official' enough to be beleiveable........ hahaha still. It could be true :p ooh im pretty scared now.

Still, better being able to say 'it might be a hoax' than 'uh oh, my phone has been dialling Nicaragua in ten hour sessions while I sleep!' when your blll arrives.

Yeah it's old.

Surely if it was fact it would be in the paper not in an email.

If only Microsoft software came with a warning in that <"For the SAKE OF GOD DONT PUSH THE BUTTON!"> format on the manual. Maybe people would read them then.

Its a hoax. Its a load of shit, its described on snopes.com and you are as gullible as all hell if you believe it. You cant give anyone full access to your telephone by dialling ANYTHING.

AT and T is the big American phone company so this is nothing to do with Australia. Someone has just tacked some (probably) fictional coppers details on auto signature like to have a laugh at you lot!

It's a hoax. It's a slightly modified version of this: http://www.hoax-slayer.com/xalan-hoax.html

Besides, we don't use AT&T here.

probably about the same time as the thread started.

as said b4, its garbage.
wont work on any carrier in this country, let alone 1 that isnt even here!

i work in the industry, and stories like this (and other whoppers!) have come and gone over the years.
i could bore you all with the techo stuff as to why it doesnt work, but that would create a full page post...

anyway, the fact that a supposed australian police officer used the word 'gaol' instead of 'jail' should be enuf to show its BS from OS!

Why's that? Gaol is the official Australian way of spelling it. Jail is American.
