Spy cameras to track cars

NICK CALACOURAS

03Sep07

THE Stuart Highway is set to get 24-hour monitoring by surveillance cameras as part of a crackdown on crime, national security and road safety.

Hundreds of cameras that record number plates will be set up on Australia's major highways under the plan by CrimTrac, which has been approved by state police ministers.

The cameras could also be used to detect people speeding on the highway, now limited to 130km/h.

CrimTrac chief executive officer Ben McDevitt said the system would be useful in police investigations.

"You imagine something like the Falconio murder where the Stuart Highway is a single highway which services most of the traffic between Alice Springs and Darwin,'' he said.

"This sort of technology would have been invaluable to an inquiry like that.''

The proposal was agreed to during a recent meeting of police ministers, but the NT did not attend because it coincided with the Estimates Committee hearings.

The Chief Minister's spokeswoman Michelle Fraser said the Territory Government was yet to discuss the proposal.

Mr McDevitt said tracking cars would also be useful in tackling interstate drug-running.

"It has got applications across three spheres. One is road safety, the second is criminal investigation and the third is with national security, such as terrorism,'' he said.

"It's quite sophisticated technology in that it can read the number plate and match it against the hit-list of (persons of) interest.

"This technology, you can put it across all lanes of traffic and what it will do is pick up vehicles up to 160km/h and up to about six cars a second.''

Glad to hear that their justificatyion could be to catch crims. Like in the Falconnio case. Has nothing to do with raising revenue

NT is a wide open area with a long distance between things. The cameras might get lonely so maybe someone could "visit" them on the odd occasion.....

Why don't they call the joint Victoria and be done with it.

We have every monitoring device know to man. Doesn't seem to effect the the road toll greatly. Particlarly if you factor in advances in vehicle saftey.

It does however raise nearly a Billion dollars per annum for the govt.

All you need is a nice road train to slightly divert its course and remove them from their foundations... accidently of course

Great news. now those many many many falconio murders that happen every year will be slightly more solvable.

What a load of crock. Its just surveillance. were working to get watched and then we get the bill in the mail for their next great idea. like a barbed wire fence around Melbourne.

Probably a little off topic here but anyways, to answer your question.

The terrorists are used for the benefit of govt...order out of chaos, the powers that be are very good at manipulation.

Al qaeda was created by the CIA in the 80's to combat the Russians in Afghanistan. You don't honestly still believe that Bin Laden pulled off the 911 attacks do you?...

Google Operation Northwoods, it's a declassified US document from the 60's...if that doesn't shock you, nothing will!!

see, the thing is, whilst most people will pay these cameras a nice little visit as soon as the NT News gets wind that their been used to process speeding fines, most will fly past them over 160km/h

i can't wait for some-one to test that theory!
because they'd be pretty friggin stupid if it was that easy to avoid the camera's, dont they think drug runners cant afford a car that does 160?

does it say where the camera's are actually going to be set-up?
is it mainly alice springs-darwin run, or is it all the way down?

he dont drive the 90ks to the pub he fly's , he's got a small aircraft and no joke he lands on the main road taxi's in to the pub parkin has a couple then flys home supose stops them from bookin him for dd

but could you imagine if it was near one of thous cameras when he's comin in to land

Why can't the cameras pick up speeders past 160 kph? Has anyone tried this? I think mythbuster's tackled this already but I have not seen that episode yet so I don't know what happened. Did anybody else it?

Top Gear did it, from memory it was 180mph before the camera didn't fire.
