Default Aftermarket cd players and steering controls

Im getting a pioneer cd player installed this week and i asked them if it would still be compatible with the steering controls and they said that I would need to get a connection which would cost several $100, and its not really worth it. I was just wondering if this was true or if there is a cheaper solution to getting the steering controls to work with the new cd player. Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks!

I asked the same question yesterday
and got a reply with this... (sorry dont know how to quote from a different thread)

"As for the steering wheel controls with an aftermarket unit, you'll need one of these:

I got one and they work absolutely perfect. (I got mine from JB Hi-Fi, you'll probably have to get them to order it in as they generally don't have them in stock)"

I had an Eclipse head unit fitted, it went straight in with no extras and the steering wheel controls work perfectly.

I fitted an Alpine CD player with the cat unit. works great .

I remember the salesman saying that the cat unit will work with most CD players that come with a remote control.

There is reference list of supported units floating around somewhere.

I bought a topline Sony (18months old) which isn't supported :(

I like the head unit but next time I'll make sure of my facts as the controls are handy and may as well be used if poss.

Same here. You should be able to pick up a CAT09 for around $160 form JB HIFI or similar.
