Default 2l Pinto Question

Does anyone know the standard bore of a 2L pinto, from memory it was 89mm ?? Can anyone confirm, or tell me ??? Gave the old manual away years ago (regretted it ever since). Also how strong is the stocko crank shaft ?? I heard its good up to around 7500rpm (without balancing or any work)??

The standard crank is pretty tough. There are plenty of boosted pinto's with stock cranks and blocks punching 300hp with no drama's. The weak point is the stock piston. It is heavy and because of this it will snap con rods.(over 8000rpm) They get ring flutter up around 7500-8000. They don't like to much boost either. The top ring landing collapses. I think they are fine for street car with twins but if your going to boost or rev it hard a lot then forgies pistons are the go.

hey guys,

Just got my hands on a digital vernier and measured the bore. I got a reading of 3.613 inches (91.78 mm) . So im guessing it has been bored out ?? Does any one know what that converts to ie 40thou ,60 thou ?? Im no good at maths haha Also are stock escort pistons flat tops ?? cos the pistons i have here are .

I just bought a block and bore measured up to be 90.5mm. And my old block that has been bored right out (60thou) and has got a lot of wear is 93mm. Yours is probibly 20thou. My .60 piston is 92mm so you should be right for another rebore

okay awesome, rather than doing a rebore could I just hone it out with out too much machining?? Also does anyone know about the pistons?? Are flat tops stocko on a standard 2L pinto ??

If your bore has little wear than a light hone with new flat top pistons would be the go. Their the stock piston. I got qouted $200.. If it has bad wear than a rebore would need to be done. The cheapest qoute i got was $140..

Have decided to give it a light hone considering the bores were very clean, no scoring or marks, and saving the $$$. Any ideas what I should do to my pistons (I want to try an re-use em) other than putting new rings on them?? What process is invovled when cleaning them to be re-used ??

Anyone know where and how much I can get a full gasket kit for a 2.0L pinto. WOuld that include timing cover, sump gasket, head gasket, oil pump gaskets etc ?? Or must I buy these individually.

Just came across some wear around the piston heads on pistons 2 and 3 ?? I was told by a friend I could just give them a light rub down with emery cloth and them just soak them in parts wash for them to be ready to re-install ?? Ive tried to attach a photo below. WHat do you reckon ??

It would be a good idea to measure up your bore and pistons. Even check your ring end gap. That wear looks pretty nasty. You could clean it up if $$ is tight. How tight is the piston on the rod? I noticed my old cast rod's were pretty tight and had bad wear like yours.
I got my hands on to some forged rods and mahle pistons and they are heaps looser on the rods..
