Default Car Insurance Query - RACV

Hi all,

I have bought my uncle's car and I will be driving it while the rego is under his name. He has 3rd Party Fire and Theft insurance on it with the RACV.

Since I'll be driving it, am I covered on this policy?

Thanks in advance.

I believe you should be. Best to just call them up and ask.

yes, the car is insured, not your uncle.
unless you are under 25 and the policy states that there will be no under 25 drivers, you will be covered.

Why wouldn't my uncle be insured? He is the registered owner and the policy is his.

I am under 25.

What he meant was, the policy is on the car, not your uncle. Your uncle isnt the one who gets stolen for example. Your uncle is the policy holder thus gets the payment if the policy is claimed on.

i think he meant that the insurance is for the car not your uncle
so the car is covered

if your under 25 id give them a call just to make sure, worst thing would be to have an accident thats your fault and have your insurance void.... call them itll take 10mins and prob save alot of money

IIRC, when my brother in law had a stack in my old car, RACV had said he would not be covered as he was under 25 - luckily he was found to be not at fault and the claim went ahead.

What I'll do is get my uncle to put my name on his policy as a driver.

until you change the rego into your name, your uncles policy will cover you as a driver. however the excesses may be higher for an undeclared driver.
however once the rego is in your name, then you will need to insure it yourself
