Default Problem urgent!!

On the way home on the motorway, the back end off my car made a sudden vibrating noise and it was slowing my speed down pretty rapidly. Vibration can be felt through the car. Something hitting the tailshaft??

But then it goes and comes back again?

Going over bumps doesnt really trigger the vibrating/rubbing..
I had a quick look under there, cant find no grinded marks or anything.
I need the ute for work tommorow 5am!!

HELP ME PLEASE..

check the exhaust... mine basically split in half at the front muffler yesterday afternoon and had similar symptoms....

check the exhaust... push on the tail pipe.. see if the rest of the exhaust work moves in different directions...

other than that... now sure.... and also.. mine is a sedan...

Just jacked it up for a proper look.

The only things I noticed were..
Tailshaft has about 1-2mm play when in neutral...
Oil on the rear seal of the transmission, I know my trans is slowly dying and I did replace that rear seal a year back, but I doubt this is the problem. When the vibration happens nothing cant be felt through the transmission.

Also had it running on the jack stands to about 80ks nothing, that was the speed I was doing on the motorway.

Studs are a good guess, I would also be checking that there is oil in the diff.

Wheel nuts are tight.

"A bad U-joint can most commonly be detected by a metallic clunking sound when the vehicle is placed in gear. This indicates play in the U-joint and should be investigated as soon as possible. Other symptoms of a failing U-joint are vibrations from the drive shaft, noticeable especially between 25 and 35 mph; shudder on acceleration and/or squeaking noises."

The drivers side (where most of the vibrating is coming from, I think) has abit more play left to right, about 1mm more.

Nope I dont really have any of those symptons above, just the normal noise when you put it into drive etc. What 25-35mph in kph, around 60-70??

Try this site for a few more ideas:
http://www.babcox.com/editorial/us/us50126.htm

30mph is 50kph (roughly).

You won't get egg in your tyres until you have had chicken in there first. Have you checked to see if you have oil in the diff? I'm suprised by the play in the rear axles, that suggests a collapsed bearing but you would hear it all the time.

Havent check the diff yet, never done it before.

Is it just undo the bottom bolt and if it leaks out, there is enough in there- on level ground???

^^ No, there is a bolt on the cover where you would fill it up. Take it off and stick your little finger in there. If you're finger gets wet it has enough.

Right hand side eh? Brake shoes? Wheel bearing? A bolt pieced the tyre? Check the pump up suspension.
