Fuel consumption..

Hi all....

Recently I took my 06 Zetec for a drive to Sydney... So it was an 8 hour or so drive, 110 k's most of the way.. and found that I wasn't getting anything better than 7.2 litres per 100 k's fuel wise.

I'm not that technical, so was just wondering if that was as expected? Does anyone get anything lower?

Thats probably not too bad. @ 100kph you would probably have gotten slightly better. But @ 110kph its around 3000rpm... So 7.2 is probably pretty good....

My Corolla when sitting on 110kph hardly gets better than 8.5 litres per 100, and its an auto (dont believe Toyota's economy claims!!!!), and it sits only around 2600 rpm. My LR focus, whilst revving slightly higher, gets better mileage......

I live on the central coast and work in Sydney and average 6.8 - 7.1 per 100 km combined freeway/city driving in LS Manual.

Only use 98 octane fuel

Have just done 75000klm and lost way more in depreciation in the last 2 years than I've spent on fuel so I try not to get to caught up in it.

I get 720 km a tank from Gold Coast to Sydney.I love the fuel economy on these things long distance.

Hmm 98 octane.
Unless your is modified,isnt it a waste of time to use 98.95 is optimum.Unless Im mistaken.

I drove from Melbourne to Sydney and I got 6.7L/100km. All freeway 100kph

As a comparison I travelled in a Mazda3(auto) loaded to the hilt from Sydney to Gold Coast and got @7.5l/100 at 110-120 in highway areas .4 on board ....

As for using 98 octane zetec 1... I usually always fill up at a shell as I always have a 4c discount voucher. I personally reckon the V power runs like a dream in the focus, more responsive, smoother idle and a bit better fuel economy. All the shell servos I visit don't have 95 fuel anymore either.

I also drove from c/coast to tweed heads on one tank of V power fuel, (fully loaded with dive gear tanks weights etc...), then filled up with 95 oct fuel to continue to the sunshine coast and noticed the difference right away, not much but I could still notice it and figure for a couple of cents I'll stick with it...

As an comparison, my LT diesel on a trip from Laidley QLD, to SA and back. Via The Great Ocean road, averaged 4.4l/100k.

It included city driving, through Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. A grand total over 3 weeks of 6,450klms. At 110klms an hour it sits on 2,000rpm, thanks to the lovely 6 speed box they come with.

Was very impressed, over 1,000klms out of a tank is always handy.

dam some good economy there. im averaging about 8.5l with my focus, but i tend to give it a bit of stick just about every time i drive.
although on a trip down to lorne, i filled a full tank, drove up and around and back down. i got 870km before the fuel light came on.
thats my best so far

Our Focus pings on 95. We use 98 whenever we can. It runs really well on 98.

Difference in economy using 91 vs 98?
91 Octane - 9.2L/100kms
98 Octane - 7.9L/100kms

Driving over the same routes. When the car pings it dumps a heap of fuel in the engine.

The lowest I've had on mine was 4.7l, currently at 4.9 most probably due to air con. Plus I give it a squirt quite regularly.

I had my AC on just about all the time. I was in western VIC around new years when the temp was very warm.

I think why i got such low numbers, was due too the mostly flat terrain. It was hovering around 4.7/100 through the coast journey all the way to Adelaide.

On the flat, heading home, through eastern SA and western NSW, till Forbes , I don't really remember a hill at all. Thats when it slowly eased to 4.3. But went up to 4.4 around Toowoomba just before home.

I average around home 4.9/100. I'm not sure how accurate the reading is. But I assume it must be pretty close?

Normal average for my LR Focus Zetec on Optimax is 10.75/100 after about 30,000km..... Would pay the upgrade off after 2 years if i bought a diesel!!!!!!

Now to convince SWMBO........ Chances? Slim.. lol

My trips are a bit hilly, I bought the car thinking I'd be getting somewhere above 5L but I was pleasantly surprised.

I've tested the accuracy of the trip computer and it was dead on accurate. The range to empty is pretty accurate as well but you can actually go a bit further than what is says so that is good

i've challenged myself on this tank to get as much mileage as possible... at the moment sitting on 6.7L/100km doing mixed driving (not much heavy traffic though..)

found smooth acceleration and cornering, with changes around 2400/2600rpm give the best mileage when accelerating, and 80km/h gives the best cruising average.

driving gently and downshifting intelligently are the best way to use less fuel

My missus car is a 02 corolla and auto and she get that(8l/100kms) around town,and still gets this after I clean the exhaust if you know what I mean

As for the use of higher octane fuel, these engines have a compression ratio of about 11:1 so higher the better.
our car pings like sh!t on 91 and a bit on 95 so 98 is the way to go.

As for the consumption, what sort of traffic does she travel in?

My Mrs has an 11km journey, which takes between 20 and 50 minutes..

She also drives on throttle, on brakes, on throttle, on brakes... which doesnt help...

Even the open road doesnt improve ours.. doesnt matter... both cars are getting replaced at some stage.

Thats not a journey thats Gridlock

My missus doesnt drive that much the car currently has 49oookms on the clock and its a Aug 02 model(live in the illawarra,so traffic isnt a huge issues unless we travel to Sydney)

Shes a shopper school driver to the kids weekend sports so Im lucky that a tank lasts so long(at least 2weeks)

So its up to me the drive harder just so that the engine doesnt slack off

I can give some feedback on an 07 auto Corolla (work car) – open road average 7-7.5L/100km range, city driving can be 8-9L/100 depending how much time is spent with the accelerator in the carpet. Best average on a tank is 6.9, worst is 9.2.
