Default which TC will fit a 250 6cyl

how can i tell which tc will be able to take the 6cyl and which can only take the 4???

TC's designed for sixes have a big bulge in the bonnet much like the difference in the current Falcon between 6 and 8 cyl.

Not quite.

The structural changes made to the Aussie 6 Cortina (Firewall changes for one) was carried over to the 4 as well. The bonnet wasnt, a few other bits werent, but conversions are possible.

As i said in the other thread, I dont know if the reinforced front crossmember was carried to the 4, or just the 6.

OP, just find out what month they released the 6, and make sure its not built before that date. Id use the 6 cyl crossmember unless you can confirm they did carry the reinforced crossmember to all models.

Most people think Ford slapped a 6 in, changed the bonnet and running gear and thats it. No, they did a fair amount of work to revise the Brit car to suit. Theres a link to a wheels mag article in the OP's other thread spelling out many of the changes. I dont think it gives him a date for release though.

Sorry - I though the original question was how to recognise if a 6 could be fitted to a TC cortina. The bonnet was the easiest most recognisable difference between the two body designs and their respective differences which I believed to be the deeper dished firewall and heavier suspension assembly.

If XR-351 wants to hide a 6 in a 4 cylinder body well than thats a different question all together and should have been posed along those lines.

I assume from this and the other thread, he is looking at buying a Cortina and wants a 6, but needs to know if he has to specifically buy a 6 or can a 4 be converted. That would make getting a decent shell a lot easier, they are prone to rust.

Firewall not only sits back, its thicker metal too.

The issue he seems to be sorting, is did all TC's have the same firewall etc, or was there a year or so where all were 4's before Ford Aus decided to shove a 6 in and thus had none of the major redesigns by Ford for the 6. From what I can tell, the very early TCs were all 4's, but I cant confirm it. Ford actually used a number of TC's in testing to see what changes they needed, so they existed before the 6 was put in by Ford Aus.

I think 6 cylinder was released late 72, maybe early 73, when they dropped the 1.6 from the lineup, So perhaps after 6 cyl release all bodies copped the 6 cyl upgrade except the bonnet. 6 cylinders also had quad headlights, and I think was only XL and XLE trim level in TC, but across the range in TD-TF

This wheels article on them is dated December 1972, so sometime in '72 seems likely.
