Default worth getting alloys repaired?

Hi,

I'll post pics come weds or thursday but my soon to be "new" XR8 ute has a fait bit of scuffing on the rims.

They are the old series II Tickford ones so I'm not sure whether to get them repaired as scuffed alloys are a pet hate of mine. Don't want anyone to think I'm a bad driver eh?

I do have a set of BA 17's under the house that are the ex GF's but I could probably score them at a reasonable price as we are on good terms.

So what's the opinions here..

1) repair tickford wheels?
2) fit new tyres from old rims, and BA 17's, sell tickfords
3) wait and buy a set of aftermarket wheels/tyres

This wheel is very easy to repair. I have seen it done using filler and repainting, and it has been very effective, at a pretty good price!

Nothing like a nice set of new wheels though, if, and when, the budget stretches!

Depends on whether you like the factory rims, or the updated variation of them (BA) or something YOU like.

If funds are tight, I'd go option 2, then 3 then 1.

If you can spare up to $2k, I'd go for a set of at least 18s, and fit the good tyres to the BA rims and sell them (should get around $600 for the lot), and then sell the tickfords for a few hundred, giving you an overall wheel budget of somewhere between $2k and $2500, roughly (might get a set of 19s for that).

Go with 1 or 3 IMO. The series II tickford rims are far better than the ba 17"s, there too common and suit the BA's more. Otherwise if you prefer some bigger, flashier wheels then go aftremarket.

I have the tickford rims also, mine have some scuffs from previous owner and it bugs me as im far more careful with gutters. Like stated earlier ive been told its not too big of a job and cost to get them fixed. If you go down this direction be sure to let us know how much it set you back!

cheers, chris

I had a chat to a couple of repairers.. $120/wheel if the only damage is small and can be simply machined out. $250 for a totally shocking one if that is of any use to you.

@$250 you are better off replacing but at $120 to get it looking nice again.

I did see this as well, intersting but not sure how easy it really could be.

Repairing scuffed alloy wheels

I guess it's still going to look better than scuffed wheels

That seems hideously expensive. There's a mob up here who are renowned as excellent but not cheap, and they don't even charge anywhere near that. A mate of mine is getting some of his fixed up with new shadow chrome etc etc (which is dear), and it was STILL less that that. Should be around $100 per rim. Is the damage superficial scratches or any deeper gouges? Another option to consider is powdercoating, especially if it's mainly superficial, and should only cost ~$50 per rim for bead blasting and powdercoating.

This is Sydney if that makes any difference..most look to be superficial but this is from memory.

For $50 I'd be getting them repaired and powdercoated:-) Never heard of doing that though.
