Default Swap AU II dash with XR6 ?

Hi all,
This is my first post as I have just purchased my 1st Ford!!
I have a standard AU Series II.
I was wondering if the dash from an XR6 will work in a standard wired AU II?
My apologies if this question has been asked before.

Welcome aboard Uncle Ken. As long as the dash is from a AUII XR6, can't see why it wouldn't work on your AUII Forte(??).

Have a look at www.aufalcon.com if you get a chance, lots of info there.

Thanks. I guessed that Ford would use a standard wire loom. How much do you think I could get an AU II XR6 cluster for?

Ford will charge about $500+ for it. You can probably snap one up at ebay or at a wreckers from $200 to about $300.

Most of the guys from aufalcon.com are actually part of this forum.

Hehehe. Yeah Dwayne i didnt notice that rack when i met you : .

As for the cluster, does the Forte have the oil pressure/battery volts senders already in place?

According to my little book, it has a oil pressure waring indicator (image of an oil can, no gauge) and a battery malfunction waring light as well. The only two gauges are temp and petrol (thats one of the reasons I prefer the XR cluster. I suppose the Fairmont cluster would be OK.

Ken,

what i mean is that both the XR and Fairmont cluster have gauges for the oil pressure, and the battery voltage. Seeing as your car is a Forte, you will need to add some things to it (i.e. sensors) to make these gauges work.

Have fun Uncle Ken. A description of Bucky would probably neither reflect his posts or his avatar.

Good luck with the dash.

Falkeen did this on his AU1 Futura and had to install a different oil pressure sensor. Apart from that, it should all wire up relatively easily.

Hey guys, i have the oppurtunity to by an AU series 1 XR8 cluster VERY cheap, just wondering if it will function properly on an AUII forte if i upgrade the oil pressure switch and change the pins appropriately as you would with a series 2/3 cluster. Any help would be much appreciated as i've been researching this all day :(
The current cluster in it has a sticky fuel guage as well so its time for a new cluster anyhow, i'd be stoked if a series 1 XR one will fit.
BTW- the guy told me they retail new for about $700!! :O

Good luck. $700 is more than I have to buy one.
How hard is it to change the oil pressure switch and and change the pins?

I'd go for the Series 2/3 XR Cluster. There is a bit of difference between them. Check on fordmods.com to see what is actually different.

When my local mechanic installed mine, i gave him the oil pressure sender, to swap with the switch, except it made the oil readings sit on 0. Going back to the original one, worked. So the AUIIIs i believe all got Oil Pressure Senders.

With the pins its fairly easy akaik. You need some patience, and some precision screwdrivers
Not sure on the oil pressure sender.

Interesting hey..

I checked, and theres a problem with AUII having smartshield and AUI having smartlock. Also AUII has speed alert and AUI don't. I decided to give it a miss.. and it was such a bargain too :(
I got a quote from a wrecker for an AUII XR cluster, $275.00... Maybe in 6 months we'll see

Also LG,If you don't mind me asking how much did it cost you to get yours installed? Did the mechanic change around the pins?

Glenn

I would be careful about mixing series one and 2 clusters. I am fairly sure that they have different wiring pins, etc - in fact I know they do. The AU2 forte has 2 connectors, while the AU1 XR8 has 3, so without some massive rewiring, i don't think this will work.

I brought my cluster for $250. I got my local mechanic to install it. He did an awesome job, making a whole new loom for it, instead of buying one from Ford which costed around $400+. The shit thing was VDO. He had to send it off to VDO, to reprogram it, and fix something which was wrong with the cluster. VDO charged alone, $255 to do the repairs, replace the e-prom, and re-program the odom, and replace the digital display.

Then i was just charged labour to fit it. $150. So all up, $400 but it was worth it. I'd have to say. The new cluster and the more readings, and integrated rpm makes it feel that extra nicer to drive.
