Default Insurance XR8 ute with exhaust, susp mods - Help!

Hi Guys,

Been having trouble with this...I was wondering if any of the Sydney peeps can help me out with insurance?

Nrma/suncorp $1250
AAMI/Shannons $1950
Budget driect $780 but wont' insure due to performance enhancements.

I'm 36 yo in a low risk subrub in sydney so what gives?

I dont' want to have to call up 50 companies this morning to find out the best one..sick of doing online quotes I can tell you.

I'm getting a bit paranoid about my uninsured car sittingout there.

Mark, this was my situation a few months ago with the XR6.

I was insured with Budget direct at a decent rate, and I am Rating 1 for life. Before I put my extractors on I called budget direct and asked how much extra it would be to add the mod to the policy. They came back and said that they would not insure me if I did that.

So rang around - RACQ was the most expensive, Allianz would not insure me if I modded the car. Suncorp was the best premium dollars wise, did not charge me extra for the mod and I still get my choice of repairer. So I stopped there and insured with Suncorp.

But why tell them ?? I mean alot of std type engines come out with them..
I'm sure aftermarket replacement is allowed???
By telling them your opening a can of warms...
Btw yes I have had claims in the past. Never had any issues...
XR 8's come with extractors etc...Just make sure its legal...

Give Shannons another call, i have both my cars insured with them as well as my home and contents, reasonably priced and cover all the mods, after all they specialise in performance cars.
If you have any dramas with them send me a PM and i will give you the details of a contact i have.

Im surprised shannons was that much. You listed it with AAMI, who did you actually get the quote through? Have you tried Just Cars, you can adjust the excess to suit you, that may bring it down a bit...

Yes you are right, whenever you do the right thing you end up getting screwed unfortunately..the system is set up that way I guess.

Anyway I went with shannons in the end.. between NRA and the cheapest but no penalty for the monthly repyament and other benefits.

I feel safer already :-)

I have a pursuit 250, Au XR8, a blown 351 XB coupe, a CRF450 X enduro bike and house insurance with them for about $3300.
Try lumping all you insurance packages with them...
PS I dont work for them!!!

Mark, as far as the uninsured car goes, get a cover note from one of the companies that will insure you. You only have to pay the premium if you need to make a claim. I think they last a month or something.

Who was your previous insurance company? If you have a good rating with them and they will insure the car then what are they offering?

I'm a bit confused...

Seems as though price is the order but ultimately you really want to be covered.

There are firms that will cover you but for extra due to the mods, but then it comes back to price and there doesn't seem to be concern over the level and quality of cover (there are companies that I would not take their policy for free).

If only Ford did insurance...........

I went for Western QBE for my XR8. Shannons were a complete waste of time as mine was a stocker bar the stripes and exhaust. Also bear in mind that the most livable city in Australia is also a epicentre for car accidents and thus, reflects in your insurance premiums.

Try Shannons again, then try Just Car.

With shannons I pay $850 for a XR8 with a blower, and I'm under 25. My WH statesman 5.7 was only $990 a year when I was 21....

Just goes to show how cheap insurance is outside Sydney. AU3 XR6 with AAMI in low risk suburb in Sydney with 1 mod - exhaust -

20y.o Male - $2660
21y.o Male - $2200
22y.o Male - $1588

RIP!!!

Just gone the just car route for my new car that I'm buying - Highly modified WRX with well over $40k under the bonnet including engine transplant, massive turbo, new intercooler, whole new suspension upgrade, ecutek EMS

22y.o. Male - $1900

Seems cheap.

I can tell you from a claims perspective this is not a wise move.....Covernote claims get scruitinised more so than your average claim, for that matter any policy within its first 3 months with a claim usually gets looked into more thoughly.

And for anyone that does what you suggest you will usually be asked to prove previous insurance prior to taking it out with that company, if all you have is covernotes, you never had insurance, because a covernote is not free insurance, it is a contract of insurance simply giving (usually a 2 week grace period to make payment) if payment was never made you never had insurance as you never forfilled your side of the contract.

EDIT: I just reread things, I am not suggesting do not get a covernote, what I am saying is it is not wise for anyone to get a covernote from one company and then move on to another company when that one runs out.

If you get a covernote from a company, it should not be taken out unless you intend have that companies cover for the full period of insurance.

Yaw - this is good advice.

Personally I would stop with the run around and go with a quote that you think is fair and from a company that you would be happy to deal with in repairing your car in a claim.

i.e. do you want the insurance you want to pay for or the insurance you want to use.

You can pay as little as you want - try and trick the system as must as you think you will get away with by not showing mods or playing with cover but in the end you may not have any cover.

Gee - you think that someone out there would provide insurance that reflects the brand value of the car you love.................................

Those are not bad prices. I don't know what your driving history is like but $1200 from NRMA for a XR8 with mods is just on the slightly higher side for a 36 year old, BUT is not extravagant.

Why don't you opt for their 50% premium discount. They will bump your excess to $2000. But you are saving $600 odd a year on premium so after 3 years (assuming you dont make a claim) you are already infront.

I haven't read every post but I have gone through HBF (yes the health mob) I attached it to my basic health and saved heaps. As for cover notes, stay clear because as the rules are different to the product disclosure for your insurance and yest they will go over the car with a fine tooth comb and then try to punch holes in whatever story you give. Happened to my brother

I've got my XR6T, XB GT, and house/contents all with Shannons for not much more than $1000. It was pretty much the same deal for my BA XR8.

Note I changed to Shannons because I was getting screwed by AAMI. From memory I was paying $1300 for the XR8 alone.

Edit : oh yeah, I'm only just 30 and in what I would say is a moderate risk suburb.

There is what is called a duty of disclosure clause in most motor policies, I have taken this from the Shannons PDS as an example as they are the site sponsor.

What you must tell us
When answering our questions you will need to answer for yourself
and for anyone else who may receive a benefit under this insurance
policy. It is important that you answer these questions truthfully
and accurately as they may affect our decision to insure you or pay
a claim.

When we may refuse a claim
We may refuse a claim if:
1. you do not comply with, “What you must tell us” on page 4
of the Product Disclosure Statement.
2. when making a claim or in connection with either your
application or the claim, you:
• are not truthful;
• have not given us full and complete details; or
• have not told us something when you should have.
