Ahh ok. But does anyone know the difference with the actual shaft itself?

You will need to check the differences in the steering rack. If there is no difference in where the intermediate shaft fits onto the rack, then the only differnece in the shaft will be the heat wrap.
I just fitted a "6 cyl" intermediate shaft to my V8 NF Fairlane - I know it's an older model, but may give you some guide. I just made sure the position and the splines on the rack were the same between the 6 and the 8 (and they are, on an NF); you will need to do the same on the AU, or just bite the bullet and buy the V8 one. Got this info off the parts database - if you can get someone to interpret it, you may find that the parts are the same. Part # Description Unit Price ER 3C662 A SHAFT STEERING COL, LOWER, (-) XR8, ALL 6 CYL ENGINES $185.25 ER 3C662 D SHAFT STEERING COL, LOWER, (4 DOOR SED (-)S/XR6 5.0 V8 OR FAIRLANE/LTD 5.0 V8 OR 4 DOOR WAGON FORTE/FAIRMONT 5.0 V8) $292.50 Note - prices are a few years old, and are trade, so don't expect to pay these - add arond 20% for up to date trade prices, and another 20% or so for retail.
