I just want to confirm that if I do not read all the posts in a certain amount of time, I get the message "no new posts" when selecting the next page. Is there a timeout somewhere for how long the new posts last?

There is indeed - effectively the new posts link is a form of predefined search that uses a short term cookie to establish when you last visited. Not sure what the time out is set to but I shall have a look.
