Default Looking at buying an ED Fairmont - Great value. Riliable??

Hey,

I'm trying to sell my Landcruiser 60 series and trade down to a Fairmont on Gas. I've been looking around, and some of the ED Fairmonts for sale are great value - especially running on gas. 1994 Fairmont, 176,000km, 1 owner, full books, on gas, $5000

My question is this: Are they as reliable as the later EF/EL's which cost a bit more, but often have higher km on them. I've heard some horror stories, but none more than other brands of cars.

Also, what's the fuel economy like? I'm guessing around 14-15/L 100km on petrol, and about 18L/100km on gas??

I'm sure some of out there have owned one during the last 10 years!!

Cheers,

Paul

My ED Falcon (ex-taxi) was uber-reliable, until I wrote it off in '03. Had barely any guts, but it had done >430000km when I got it :p

Although, I bought a BA Fairmont (140000km) for $8k, so there's gotta be better deals than that. I'm sitting at the station waiting so that I can pick it up with SVI gas

You don't still have your '03 BA XT? If so, whack it on gas!

Yep, I've got the BA (It's the wifes at the moment) and the petrol is slowly killing me.... It costs around $2700 for a conversion doesn't it?? I was looking at selling my cruiser for about $7000 - $7,500 buying a fairmont on gas, then spending the rest getting my (sorry the wifes) car put onto gas.

That taxi has probably gone around the clock once!! I worked on them for a few years, and most of the EL's that were taken out of service had 900,000, or above 1,200,000km!!

Yes and yes.. If you want to spend 45 min and $40's .. Replace head bolts with new ones...But if they look fine ? Don't worry..

5k is a fair bit too much for an ED.

For that money I'd be looking for a clean EL Fairmont on gas.

ED/EL the best taxi ever made.

left standard with gas it will serve you for a very long time if its maintaned properly.

my ED gli when stock on long trips no gas used to do 10.5l/100km gas thier alot better.

but you can pick up a decent El for around 4k.

check out the rest of the forum aswell my dad bought an EL from this forum for $1,700 and all he replaced after driving it to Coober Pedy from adelaide over 800km was the top radiator hose he gave the paint a polish and its the best car he ever bought so he sais.

For 5k, I would be looking at later e-series falcons like EL's. Unless the ED you're looking at is really mint.
