Default Weird noise in new Focus hatchback.

Hey all, just test drove a new Focus, and apart from turning the stupid wipers on every time I turned the corner (I'll never learn LOL), it wasn't too bad. However, it DID have a sort of high pitched whirring noise coming from somewhere (couldn't exactly pinpoint it) that happened every now and then...obviously, the dealer couldn't hear it at all : . The car was low on fuel with around 60 klms to empty (as usual) so I was wondering if it might be the fuel pump protesting? Anyway, we're going to test drive another one on Wednesday afternoon (ran out of time today) to see if it has the same noise in it. As you can probably guess, I haven't got a clue about the Focus as I'm a Falcon fan through and through, so be gentle with me, it's my first time .....cheers Linz.

They have electro/hydraulic power steering. That makes quite a high pitched whir. You especially notice it when you shut the motor down as the pump continues for a second or two. That could have been the noise you heard. Turn the wheel off centre while you are stationary and you should pick the power steer whir straight away.

No, I'm not ignorant and I'm not trying to ---- people off, I'm just wanting to know some facts about a car before I write a cheque : . Obviously, the dealer isn't going to tell me all the problems that I've read about these cars on here, so I'm just after some truthful answers from actual owners. I'm sure you'd do the same if in my position and not jump in blind and buy a new car without the facts....cheers Linz.

Sorry.... you didn't get it.

Coming into a Focus area of the Forum and describing the Focus' as "buzzboxes" is downright rude and offensive IMHO.

We welcome anyone asking questions. As I would if I was asking about V8's (which I've owned).

But I wouldn't go into a V8 section and describe the cars as barges, dinosaurs, or boat anchors...... for example

Well said Stephen! Although I would like to add that 'buzzboxes' seemed to have been the limit to Linz knowledge of the Focus... as he is still waiting for someone to explain what 'hyperdrive' is....

linz - We've had ours for 12 months now and 11 000km. Not a thing to report with ours, its been smooth motoring.

As for the hyperdrive, 20focus05 was just making a joke about the noise the power steering pump makes when you shut down the motor. It certainly can be a talking point with people who have never experienced it.

Sorry Stephen....I didn't mean to offend anyone but "buzzboxes" was an affectionate name that that we used to call ALL fast small cars years ago....so in actual fact, I was complimenting the Focus. :eclipsee_...cheers Linz.

Ill second that, we always used to refer to our 4cyl babies as buzzboxes, especially when we knew that our little buzzboxes could blow the pants off most v8's.....ah....the early turbo years and the look on some of those faces.

mmmm
Well I'm 50 years of age, and it's always been a term of derision not affection in my memory.
But let's move on

In our case I think it depended on who was using the term as well as when it was used, if it was coming from an unhappy chappy with a V8 then yes it would most likely have been an derogatory term, but generally it was used in jest or as an endearing term. But I suppose it could also depend on how the term was used in a particular geographic location.
Youre right though...lets move on.

We didn't need turbos back then...I had a worked 2 litre Escort and also a 1600 Subaru Leone with a 32/36 DGV weber and both of them would give the 253 Holden boys the s%!*s.... that was 28 years ago, but boy, was it fun :eclipsee_
