Default Collapsed lifter !

What is the easiest test that can be done with simple tools to tell if a lifter is collapsed or not.

I don't mean to sound like a smartarse, and I hope this isn't dangerous advice, but wouldn't firing up the motor and having a listen inform you of a collapsed lifter?

Surely a valve in one of the cylinders will be going Kdink kdink kdink?

Or how about cold-cranking or whatever it's called, like what you do when conducting a compression test? If a lifter isn't funtioning, that'd give a kdink noise when the valve hits the piston?

Its not a valve spring issue or yes a valve would touch a piston, its more of a I think the lifter is not opening the valve fully, but not sure exactley which one, hence I need a simple test.

:( ok so no easy test then, anyone got a hard way to do it using really expensive test equipment that will only ever be used once in a lifetime ?

Jason, take off the rocker cover, and bring the cam shaft through one full rotation and when the valves have just closed check to see if there isany movement in the rocker arm.

on thing you can try is take the rocker cover off and run the engine with the rocker cover off... dont worry oil doesnt spray up or anything. just use a screwdriver or something and rest it on top of each rocker arm and see if you can hear which one its coming from, you should be able to hear it through the screwdriver... possibly!
