Default Quick Transmission Question

G'day,

I have a pretty good feeling the XR's transmission is looking at taking a permanent vacation, and I'd like to organize something before that happens so...

Is the transmission on Fortes/Fairmonts etc interchangeable with the transmission on XR's? And if so, will I lose the Adaptive Shift functionality, or is it ECU governed?

Cheers

From what ive heard, they are all the same and the adaptive shift comes from the ecu and has nothing to do with the trans itself?
Anyone 2nd that.

gearboxes physically are all the same, its the electronics that governs what the gearbox does (to an extent)

Unfortunately, that box has 200,000 + k's on it. However, I went in nutter's car last night and it definately doesn't feel right. When you floor the throttle (at 100 km/h), its like its down on power in 2nd gear and makes a weird clicky sort of noise when changing into 3rd. Kinda hard to explain. AND fuel economy is even worse than usual for a car driven pretty hard.

Funny you should mention that, driving Dad's BA work car this morning makes the AU seem like a 2 cylinder in comparison (fuel consumption, not performance)

As for Austin's idea, as steely said, the silver car's transmission had 200k k's on it, and a big front end shunt...don't want to even try.

My old man, been the generous bloke he is, is gonna have a look tomorrow at the transmission/diff, he said it may even be just low fluid, or worse...

Thanks for the help, my main concern was that non-XR AU's only have 2 transmission "shift patterns" (econ and not-so-econ), whereas XR's have 3 (econ, "adaptive" and "performance", the later been sponsored by Shell Emoleum Fuels) and changing to a transmission from a non XR would lose that. Thinking about it, a stupid question but better safe than sorry...

Before totally discounting your own box have you changed the fluid recently and/or checked the condition of the solenoids/bands?

In the event all of the above has been tried, ideally you should be looking at the BTR97LE. there was also the BTR93LE that went into the AU's too.

The XR's Adaptive Shift patterns (as more correctly sponsored by Tickford rather than Shell) are a function borne out of the ECU rather than the actual gearbox.

Does the gearbox downshift at 100kays? Does it sometimes change ultra hard down low? Describe the symptoms first please.

It does shift hard down low, but that's more shift kit that anything else. With it off, smooth as.

At 100 kays it does downshift, but it sometimes can take a second or two for it to do it. And when it does, it seems to be sluggish in power delivery.

Sometimes around town it will refuse to downshift for up to 3 seconds.

We did check the fluid over the weekend, it seemed okay (for a car that has 150 thousand on it presumably without a transmission service. And the level was only a ml or two down from full.

doesnt sound like the problem is with the trans, the trans only does what it is told from the ecu... you probably have a fault with a sensor, or a stretched accelerator cable?
