Your opinion on resetting the ECU

I am wondering how many people have reset their ECU and what your opinion is of the result (fuel economy, power, throttle response etc). Bum-o-meter feel is OK as I am not expecting exact rwkw, l/100k's etc. I have heard/read that doing this after mods is a good idea and I haven't done so since doing the mods listed below.Thanks

i have several times reset my computer, i do it after any major engine mods. (i.e- CAI,Exhaust, etc). I had an I6 that wouldn't idle after resetting ECU-all good.

When I reset. mine Idles at around 400rpm for about 100k's. Cant feel much difference, but probably cant harm it. It learns about the new mods in the same amount of time anyway.

Hmm...I have found that every time you reset the battery it changes the tune at idle,low and medium throttle positions. What I have found is that the car nearly always run richer at idle after a battery reset and most areas but wot. It takes a few days for idle air fuel ratios to sort themselves out.

A battery reset may help if the computer has a bug which may require a restart to get it going properly.In that instance the car will pickup some good performance.

I find that in my case after doing a reset, i have no power, and no economy for a couple weeks, i did it recently and got 350km's to 1st tank, 450 to 2nd, 500 and so on.

better off just letting the car learn the new mods for its self... Should only take a couple of hundred kms... Fords are smart enough lol

A reset is good as it clears all the previous data (mixtures, injector pulse, igintion ect) that the computer learns and starts over again. This is why it takes a while, IMHO a few weeks, before the car feels better again, as it takes that long for it to relearn the new settings.

All it does is give the car a better base learning point.

In your case you should benefit from it having never done one in a while. It''ll take a while as others have said for everything to settle down again, but consider it good housekeeping.

Thanks for the replies guys. My most recent basic engine mod was the snorkle/K&N filter and that would have been done at the beginning of the year IIRC. As such it appears that my car should have sorted itself out according to most that posted. Will toss a coin and see which way to go as it seems to be an even split between you all. One question about resetting the ECU though, if you reset it while a tune is in the ECU, will that wipe the tune, therefore rendering your flash box useless, if that makes sesne? In other words, should you flash the computer back to stock, reset it, then flash the tune back in to avoid any hassles?

I have found in the past that resetting the ECU can work wonders.

- I have had a really really bad vibration that was the torque convertor locking up to early in the rev range, auto shop said its just something i will have to put up with cause there renowned for it... reset ecu anmd now is perfect.

- Currently I have a surging problem that disappears after I reset the ecu. (See http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11231725) Any help on that would be appreciated.

- I had a collapsed cat and after getting that replaced, followed up with an ECU reset to help the car relearn quicker & the car had never ran better. It was a huge difference.

I do know of other falcons (going back to E series company cars) that constantly had problems with the running of them. Would take them to the ford dealer to be fixed every 2 weeks (about every 5000km) and they would "Fix" and return the car, all they were actually doing was resetting the ECU each time. Thats all they could do apparantly.

Any help on my issue above would be appreciated. I posted it in the 6Cylinder section but have had no response.
