If the rules are anything like those in NSW then any N/A six that makes more than 200kW is banned as well, so thats your Porsches, M3's, Hinda NSX

You should be able to ring QLD transport for a list if they have one, but they might just say anything that is 200kw, V8 and turbo's and then leave it up to you to work out what is what.
The local Police might even be able to help you out.
Apparently you can apply for an exemption if there is only one car in the family available to drive and you 'need' to drive it, but not sure how true that is.

I've read of people getting exemptions, claiming it's a work vehicle, etc

Here's the link to the section in Qld Transport, that deals with High powered and performance vehicle restrictions and covers everything including exemptions etc.

High-powered and performance vehicles include those with:

* eight or more cylinders
* a turbo-charged or super-charged engine that is not diesel powered
* an engine that has a power output of more than 200 kW as per the manufacturer's specifications
* a rotary engine that has an engine capacity of more than 1146cc as per the manufacturer's specifications
* a modified engine that must be approved under the Transport Operations (Road Use Management – Vehicle Standards and Safety) Regulation 1999, section 30.

An engine more than 200 kW. I would have thought it would be better to restrict on a kW per weight basis.

New Mazda CX9 has 204 kW but weighs just over 2 tons, tyre screeching 1/4 mile performance, I don't think so.

DO you think the people who decide on these laws are educated to that degree though?

Fair enough, You and I as car enthusiasts know that a bog standard BA Falcon is a alot quicker then some older model factory turbo/super/V8 cars.

It's just one of those things. P plates last for 3 years of your driving years. That is nothing. Buy an old banger or a nice N/A car and then when the 3 years is up, you would have saved enough to get a turbo/V8/super car. Or do a conversion on existing.

And if you wanna risk driving a car on your P's that you're not supposed to, then good on you for quite possibly making the laws tougher for generations of P-platers to come.

How much does, for example, a BA Falcon weigh? Somewhere between 1650 an 2000kg? There are so many options and variables that it would be impossible to enforce.

The 200kw idea is simple and easy. The average copper can easily spot those who have the wrong attitude and deal with them accordingly.

If it does not let you drive the car of your dreams (as every P plater lusts over a CX-9 or Aurion) then tuff titties.

It could have been 150kw max and that would have got ride of almost all of the e-mutants and v-bogans but then there would be a glut of crap cars for sale with no buyers.

The system is not perfect as a Lotus Exige, Elfman or many of the other exotics that would easily blow most Ford/Holden/Rice V8s and turbos into the weeds are still available to the P brigade, but as these are not fully hektic and rather expensive they tend not to appear too often on the radar.

It is good to see that the new generation of high powered turbo deisels have been restricted as these can also be a more than a handfull to the inexperienced.

Just wondering is that 200kw at the fly wheel or 200kw at the rear wheels? I'm guessing the fly wheel but how would they know if its over? 200kw at the wheels seems like a hell of a lot since some turbo jap cars wouldn't have that.

From that post I would assume you are a cop? If so considering you drive a high powered car, how do you react to other high powered cars when you are on the job? Some of the police here have decided even though I drive like an everyday person I must be a hoon due to my car considering 95% of the time I have my daughter in the car hooning is the last thing I want to do.

My Hq 202 could pull 160 kmh down wind , not exactly a powerhouse , my wifes Mazda 3 has about 105kw and could do 180kmh I reckon and 0-100 in @ 10sec . Still quick enough for any hoon to get in to trouble. I have said repeatedly to anyone who will listen that advanced driving courses should be mandatory for learners . You need to experience emergency situations in a controlled environment to increase your chance of a positive outcome. To many kids who get taught to pass a driving exam but not taught really how to drive.

An FG XT running on regular unleaded puts out 195kw, but if you were to run it on premium you do get the benefit of using the fuel and it goes over the 200kw mark and legal for P platers to drive. :

Ah simplicty at its finest, i did 50% or more of my driving on p's in a TDi Ford Courier and im fairly sure given the right circumstances i could have stoved it and killed myself and others with its 70kw powerhouse.

250kw or 50kw doesn't mean jack, the only variable that changes is the amount of time it takes to get to "dangerous" speeds.

On another note im due to go on a government sanctioned driving holiday for a few months and when i get my license back there is the possibility that i will be a p plater under the new laws, this should be interesting since out of 3 cars i own 2 are V8's and 1 is a turbo 6 :

a few:
Honda S2000

It states 200kw as per manufacturers specs. So it'd be flywheel kw I'd imagine. About 140rwkw.
