I often visit this site...Fantastic http://www.airliners.net/ Have a look at the top pics of all time...esepcially the one of thee 747 coming front on after leaving LA airport..also the pics of the Air France 747 landing at the Dutch Antilles coming in low over a beach

We asked him if the engine had actually been called “Seagull” and how that came about. “Actually it was just call “Gull”, because I named it that. Because we knew it was going to poo on everything”. |

Yes, the SR71 is one of my favourites. They say the the top speed was Mach 3.2 but the maximum was never disclosed, suspected to be substantially more. Not bad for a late 1950's design. There was a story about one that actually accelerated away from a missile heading for it.
Never anything like it since, and probably never will be. |

My wife used to live near Stewart Airforce base in NY.
C-5's would come over the top as would C-17's all the time. Sometimes they do airshows there too. I rememeber seeing the last few Concorde's to fly in JFK airport (Air France). It was only a week or so before they pulled the plug on them. Love that shuttle shot. Suprising that he is so close without being in restricted airpspace, or is it a plane from NASA that took the shot.?? |

I was able to score some $39 each way JetBlue tickets to South Florida a few times, and definitely prefer that airport to EWR: Newark, LGA or JFK! I have to say I enjoy looking out the window when taxing and seeing all the military planes still sitting there. way cool!

Here's another pic of the B52 -
 This plane is at Duxford in the UK, I met some of the museum workers back in 1990 (got a private tour) and they pointed out something interesting about that aircraft, look at the fuselage forward of the landing gear and you will notice ripples in the skin, this is caused by many hard landings 'bending' the fuselage and rippling the skin. This aircraft was retired due to this. Here's the LAX 747 pic I think was mentioned by GTO132 -

Yep, awesome stuff.
What I don't understand is why the Guvmint want to decommission these. As far as I know, the replacement Fa18's and the Joint Strike Fighter cannot fly from Australian soil to Indonesia and back without refueling, unlike the good old Aardvarks. So all the Indonesians have to do is bomb the carrier and everyone is up the creek. Though I am sure I am missing something obvious, but meh.

There are arguments on both sides 'for & against'.
There is no doubt the "Old Pigs" are on their way out, the only airframes left spare are the National Guard ones in the Arizona desert & there aren't enough of them. Most of the machines here are completely rebuilt from scratch at Amberly and are just about 'out of time' on critical flight components. As for range the FA-18 we are getting has extended range over our FA-18 fighter and they can carry a "Blue 82" to Indo if they had to. They will also carry the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) 'Smart Bomb'. Boeing has stated, "Strike Attack Super Hornet, F/A-18 E and F, from Boeing (previously McDonnell Douglas) flew for the first time on November 29th 1995. The Super Hornet is about 25% larger than its predecessor, the F/A-18C/D but contains 42% fewer structural parts. The single seat F/A-18/E and the two seat F/A-18/F flies greater ranges, with heavier payloads, uses a more powerful engine and provides greater survivability." "The Super Hornet being larger than its predecessor carries more weapons. The aircraft has eleven weapon stations which include two additional wing store stations in comparison to the earlier aircraft. The F/A-18E/F will support a full range of armaments. Flight tests activities carried out during 1997 have included the launching of the air-to-air missiles, AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-7 Sparrow and the AIM-120 AMRAAM; the release of guided air-to-ground weapons, Harpoon, SLAM, GBU-10, HARM, and Maverick; the release of free-fall air-to-ground bombs, Mk-76, BDU-48,Mk-82LD, Mk-82HD, and Mk-84." I don't know much about the JSF-X35 which will replace it in time. I still luv the 'Pig'
