ok well im wondering wether the tie rod ends on mk1 are different to mk2?

A very vague memory tells me Mk1 imperial sizes and Mk2 metric - or am I confusing this with something else?

its prolly right. um. well i have the new ends now anyway for a mk2. when the wheel alignment was done on mine they said that the tie rod ends wouldnt tighten coz they were the wrong size. so yeah. hopefully that fixes the prob. its coz the 4 piston brakes use the mk2 hub

the tie rods are the only things you need to change when putting MK2 struts into a Mk1, lower ball joints & sway bar etc are all the same

Only the early Mk 2 struts will fit a Mk 1. Late ones, you have to change the strut top as they are smaller on the later Mk 2 models.

Mk 1 tie rod ends will not even fit/let alone tighten up on a Mk 2 rack. The thread is completely different.

You can get what they call "green" tie rod ends which have the later course thread to fit the Mk 2 rack, but the smaller tapered end to fit the early struts (ie Capri struts). An easier option is to just fit a Mk 1 rack.
