4 or 5 speed? how can i tell?

im lookin at buying a escort gearbox interstate. could any1 help me identify if it is a 5 speed? help greatly appreciated.

1 will have 5 gears ,no seriously the shifter on a 5 speed has 3 screws fixing it to the top of the housing and if in an escort the whole in the tuneel will be moved back about 100mm the 4 speed has 1 fine nylon thread that usually is cross threaded!!!!!

If it's an "Escort" gearbox it will have four gears.

Sorry to say but the info on that page is only relevant to English vehicles and the chance of any of those gearboxes being found here is very remote.

In Australia MkII Escorts only came with one gearbox - a four speed. Full Stop.

If you can find a Sierra 5-speed box all the intermediate ratios are the same as the four speed.

The model designation given to the "Toyota" (T50) box is not one I've ever heard of before. Not in this country anyhow.

The Type 9/N 5sp box on that page is a Sierra gearbox isn't it? I am guessing T50 would be a Celica box.

Thanks for that, (slap) I'm just a newby. I think what the guy asked for was... "how do you tell the different boxes apart?" and to that end, and that end only, I think the pictures of the different boxes is useful. Certainly helped me out.

so if mk1 and 2 gearboxes were the same the number i provided would be a good id?

Victordaho> The way I understood the first post was that the guy (78 ESCORT VAN) wanted to know how he could tell a four speed Escort box from a five-speed Escort box - basic answer "there is no such thing as a five-speed Escort box". Not in A MkII Aussie one anyhow. So he now has to go back to the guy selling the box and ask HIM for some further info and identification as there are several conversions of different boxes that could be fitted to a MkII Escort. Our trying to second guess what the seller is offering is no help to 78 ESCORT VAN.

outback_ute> Yes, it is Sierra; and the "T50" would most likely be a Celica box (steel case) but I have just not heard anyone ever refer to them as anything except "steel case Celica box". There were three different ones and the basic difference (and easiest way to tell them apart) was the first gear ratio.

Just bought a gearbox, advertised as a 5 speed, but looks very much like the 4 speed going by the photo's, was a good price (another reason to beleive its not a 5 speed)and is recond so no matter, will be a good spare.
