If I had a dollar for every 17-18 year old who has come looking for work expecting 40 or 50k when they have no idea what they are doing (even though they think they are IT experts) I could have already retired. The whole "If you fail you just get to do it again and again until you pass" and "You are an individual, no one has the right to tell you what to do" mentality has made the employment of school leavers far to costly and dangerous so many employers, like myself, just refuse outright to employ school leavers. Is this fair, probably not. Is this reality, sure is. School leavers are a product of a very flawed system and until the system is fixed it will go on like this for ever. |

But thank you for the typical "it is someone else who is at fault and not me, everyone else is just as bad" reply that is so common. It would be refreshing for one to have someone, without prompting, ask "So what can I do to make myself more employable?" |

these days , the apprentices expect to watch you do the work whilst explaining to them what your doing : the mentality is very differant . |

It is a big issue though ive been through a handful and have given up. I know alot of other tradesman to and they are having the same issue we have all moved on to mature aged apprentices much better investment or just stick with fully qualified workers but good ones cost you big money and dont often like been told what to do expecially if there older then you. |

I work in underground mining, and am worried about my job in this financial crises.
Although I work in Gold, The company I work for has huge investments in Nickle, which is worth nothing at the moment. So i worry about how long they can last. I know AFF has a few miners on board and would like to hear if any feel insecure about there job.

Hasn't affected me much.....yet!
I work for Telstra and just the other day they sacked the entire 2nd floor! (Inbound Residential sales)....just hours after Sol announced he was leaving Telstra in June and taking a cool $3M with him. For those that are wondering why the sudden downturn in the world economy, here's my view on it... Our whole banking system has been built on debt, this is the problem. You go to your bank and ask for a loan, so what does your bank do?...they create your loan amount out of thin air...then you pay it back with interest !! This ponzi scheme (known as fractional reserve banking) started way back in 1913 when the Federal Reserve came into existence. Now nearly 100 years later the US dollar has lost over 95% of it's stock market value. Add to this, the dodgy derivatives market which has gone into the quadrillions of dollars and you'll see why we are in another "engineered" depression.

there isn't much work available in Gippsland, but i don't think that's entirely the fault of the 'economic downturn'. but when i was given apprentices to look after, i always made them do the work, even if i had to tell them everything to do. i think the best way for someone to learn is to do something themselves and a little bit of guidance doesn't hurt.

Well the mine I was working at shut just before xmas, I was lucky enough to get a transfer to another contract only to have it shut down ( about 6 weeks left) but luckily I have enough experience as a diesel/drill fitter and a good reputation to still have some options the guys that were riding the boom aren't so lucky.

I work in fitness both as a personal trainer (my own business) and at an RTO training new and upcoming personal trainers etc
For my business - im actually expending and taking on new ventures, as im seeing it through my business, it could not be better - clients are still paying lump sum payments and im having to knock clients back simply because i dont have the time My fulltime job - same basically, there is no slow in the new students coming in (in fact i would say there is an increase and our prices have recently gone up) now i understand that there are major problmes in the economy at the moment and due to that im preparing myself (to some extent - my car is booked in for custom tune and some work for sat :P) for what can happen. My sister and mum have been majory affected and im lucky enough to be in a suitation where i can help them out. I feel for everyone affected and all i can do is wish and hope that you / we all get through it and to keep a positive spirit. Cheers

Went onto a voluntary three day week recently. Got a call from the CEO in person today basically saying I've lost my job. I took the job about three months ago. Last in first out kind of situation.
Not sure what I'll do now. Maybe use this as an opportunity to get out of IT and retrain. Not sure as what. |
