Well we headed out car shopping yesterday. We ended up buying a second hand i30 TD in red with 10K on the clock and it has the ESP safety stuff.

We test drove the i30 petrol and the diesel and they were both absolutely fantastic. The petrol was a smooth quite ride however the diesel had that and the extra punch of a turbo.

We also test drove the new focus and all i can say is it has really loud road noise and the seats were very un-comfy. Nice power though.

All in all, I would recommend the i30 TD to anyone who is looking for a small car.

Hyundai i30 is surprisingly brilliant. It's still below the Japanese and European competitions, but it's a nice A-to-B day to day car.

Just flew into Sydney last night and went to AVIS to get a car. Filled in the paperwork and they said goto D13 for your car......... well I just about walked past it just like on the TV ads.!!!! Definately Hyundai have changed their image with this car.

Only did a short drive into the city to the hotel and then out to the site this morning (mostly along the M5) but it seems fairly comfortable (I am am about 5'14") and punchy off the line and does not seem to have much auto lag when using the gears manually with the auto. Although it is not my cuppa tea and is missing 4 cylinders, for the short time that I have driven it so far it is not a bad car for a second car. All that said though I would still prefer to drive the wifes XR4 :eclipsee_

Hyundai's five years ago were crap. Nowadays they are an equal for anything $ for $ and LOTS better than stuff that sells for lots more $. Brand snobs won't buy them but that will be there loss as in many cases they are paying more for less.

i agree, a very good vehicle for the price the i30

hmm thats why it scores better than most of its competitors. There can only be 1 reason that a company would put a 5yr unlimited km warranty on their vehicles and thats confidence in the product.

imagine our beloved ford doing the same they would go broke (faster than they are now).

yes the focus and fiesta handle better, but you also get a harsh noisy ride to go with it.

but i dont know if you would make back the difference in the purchase price between the petrol and t/d i30 quick enough to warant the extra money.


all i know is when i worked at the ford /hyundai dealership i prefered to drive the hyundai's

Its an extra $5000 straight up!!!!

Although we managned to pick ours up second hand for about the same price as the petrol. :

I guess it's all depend on what you look for in a car. I'd pick the Focus over the i30 anyday of the week. But the i30 is still a good car nonetheless.

this car seems great! 5 star safety rating, extremely low consupmptions (diesel), id go for this over other makes if i was in the market for this sort of car, this is a great step forward for korean car makers!

I will say the new Hyundai's are awesome in my opinion. They've definitely improved form the older models.

Most diesels are, they make their torque low down.
Petrols power will win in the end, and diesel is expensive atm ($1.80 or so).

Our patrol costs $240 to fill now, it's ridiculous.

I haven't seen the i30 but I'd pick a lot of other cars over the Focus, including most of the jap ones. I don't know what Ford were thinking but the interior of the Focus is absolutely atrocious. The car itself drives beautifully but when you combine the poorly built interior with the amount of problems people in the Focus forum said they had, I decided to give it a massive steer (even though it was cheaper!).

Are these problems just with the South Africa assembled Focus? Just about every example of the German built Focus I've seen over here in NZ has been very good, and I've been in more than a few of them.

Yeah they were all S.A. built Focuses... The VW Golf and Polo are also built there and the 2008 Polo was as bad as the focus was inside.

My Father In Law is picking up his Moonlight Blue Diesel i30 today, and he's been waiting a few months now. Only negative thing I've read about them is the poor tyres on the base models. I can't see him going wrong with one of them, nice torquey motor, and over a Thousand K's per tank!
When he was looking for a car in that price range, I was the one that actually got him looking at them. (I felt a little dirty recommending anything other than a Blue Oval car), but with the good wraps in reviews and an award here and there, I thought they'd be a good thing. (He wouldn't stretch for the safety pack though)

has anyone owned and driven either of these vehicles for awhile?

i have been looking at either the xr4 or the i30 and found that if i rip the running gear including suspension out of the xr4 and put it in the i30 you would have the perfect car (except would have to make i30 bit lighter)
my observation is that
xr4: good performance great handling great looks everything else about the car is pathetic, toilet roll holders for door handles (interior ones), paint looks like about 1 coat of colour 1 coat of clear leather feels and looks like plastic and isnt even leather on sides the stereo is about of the same quality as my mobile phone seats are comfy but did i mention that the power and handling is pretty sweet?
oh and location of audio controls on steering wheel?? wtf?? gear knob too close to console/dash i could keep going but ya get the idea.
i30: reasonable performance (petrol) handling bit sloppy but quite reasonable, paint excellent ,interior excellent, stereo excellent (for standard system) and just the overall amount of creature comforts included with the vehicle standard (slx) like cruise climate esp traction etc and just overall a much better lay out of controls plus there is the 5year unlimited km warranty compared to xr4 3 year 100k/km warranty
bout the biggest problem the hyundai has is its a hyundai!
so my question to people is have you had any problems with the i30?

This is a little off topic, but I agree with the people saying Hyundai are making good cars now. My missus has an 06 Getz and for the price you cant get a better New/Newish car.

Also warranty wise I snapped the aerial base trying to adjust it, rang head office spoke to the warranty man and no questions asked just said no worries just take it to your local dealer and get her fixed up no charge. Pretty damn good IMO. But the service manager at the dealer well thats another story!!! But it is a shared dealership who mainly deal in blue ovals. So unsure of what specific Hyundai dealerships are like.

All in all I think we will be getting another Hyundai when its time to trade probably an i30

i havent read it all but the mother in law just brought one of these bout 2 weeks ago and she is very impressed with it so is the father in law. Goes well and seems to have been build quite well too unlike proir 96/7 hyandai's.

Only thing they were looking at the diesel version but for the price of that you could buy the top of the range petrol version. They went with the middle of the range petrol version and the L/100kms between the petrol and diesel isnt huge either. though i not sure by how much though.
The other thing i will point out is new ipod dont work with the usb but older ones Gen 1/2 do lol

I don't think that you can beat an i30 Diesel for the money, I actually think that the more expensive diesels (Focus/ Golf etc,) are probably a little bit better, but not enough to justify the price, I think the snob value the badge doesn't have and the underwhelming looks are it's only true detrements, but when you are talking about a $6,000 saving off a Focus TDCi, they an easily be forgotten. That said, it's about the only car in Hyundai's range that can really hold a candle up against it's competition, except for the Getz who's competition consists primarily of the pathetic Holden Barina.

Friend's father wanted a car to drive to work, after offloading the old '87 Pajero (and my friend bought a new Pajero last year).
Looked at several small calls from Honda, Toyota etc., but went with the Hyundai merely for bang-for-buck. For what you pay, you get a tidy car that is fairly well equipped.

It may not be the best driving experience, but when you want to get from A-B, as far as I've been told, it's a major improvement over previous Hyundai models.

My parents are on their 3rd Hyundai in a row, never had a single problem with any of them, the latest one they have is an Auto Elantra SLX .... it's a very nice car.

I drove around in it for 3 weeks when the parents were in the UK and I was between cars, I had just sold my Lancer VRX and was looking around for something else.

I was very impressed with their Elantra, it was a very quiet, reasonably refined ride, very low reving on the freeway for a 4 Cyl (just over 2k at 100km/h), the seats would be one of the most comfortable I have ever sat in, my only compaint with the car was that the power steering felt overly exaggerated with little feel for what was happening on the road ... other than that it was a great package, and all with the best 5 year warranty in the business .... never mind what Mitsubishi claim ... Iv'e been there and tested that, but that's another story!

In contrast some are mentioning the XR4 as another contender for a second car, I have one and have owned it now for 15 months.

I think comparing the XR4 to the likes of the i30 is a little difficult as they are really 2 completely different animals ... it all depends what you are looking for in a car, second vehicle for the wife or not.

Put it this way stepping into the Elantra from the XR4 is like stepping into a Bentley Continental .... the XR4 is rough and raucous, it's ride is hard and unforgiving, the seats imo are not at all comfortable, it's fairly thirsty, it creaks, rattles and groans like the best of the Fords of old ...... but, it is a fun little car to drive, it performs fairly well (albeit needing a little encouragement) but without a doubt it's strongest point is the handling, everything happening at the road is felt right at your fingertips, once you feel that .... all it's other irks and quirks are completely forgiven and all that matters is the smile it leaves on your face.

well we have taken the plunge and put a deposit on a i30 slx in the manual petrol for the final sum of $23600 drive away, although i then decided to add a couple of extras lol, like the teflon paint protection, fabric protection, vinyl and plastic protection 2x electronic rust inhibitors all with lifetime warranty (transferable)(1 for the hyundai 1 for me old girl) extra 3 years warranty (8 years all up) 8 years roadside assist and tinted windows so the final sum is $25,243 not a bad price i think?
