Question for those that do work at sea / or on such bloody big boats - why aren't gas turbines used?
Are they too inefficient at sea level?

i thought gas turbines were better for higher speed vessels like the big catamarans you see at austal ships, rather than for low down hundreds of thousands of tonnes moving grunt.

$10.99 but they recommend you shave the heads first....
But we dont have any in stock, can get it overnight from sydney, but its $10,091 for delivery overnight... Cheers

The sums dont add up. 15'000 container capacity, each container is 21 tonnes gross= 315,000t plus fuel. States load capacity of 123,200t ???May be they allow a loss of containers in transit.

1 x dry (empty) 20' container is approx 2 1/2 tonnes.

I bring in 10 containers a year(20ft) and not one of them has over 8 tonne in it.
It really depends what the goods are. I suspect very few containers are shipped at full weight capacity, but i bet they are all full.

We bring in 1-2 per month, all full, all about 21t. Its not economical paying to ship fresh air. But, back to topic-------

Try fitting 21t of polyurethane into a 20ft container.

Theres a few interesting comments in this thread...I was in the Merchant Navy for 12 years, mostly spent on VLCCs (Tankers) for Shell, and BP. Yes, the ships are this large, the engineroom usually have 4 engineers, of which 1 is the C/E - my background. Used to do 4 month on / off trips...anyway...
The engines are generally 2 types - either Sulzer or MANB&W, all built under license by the various yards around the globe - typically Korea and China. These are Slow speed engines, 2 Stroke diesel, utilising scavenge entry ports and a single exhaust valve. They almost always run on HFO (Heavy Fuel oil) anything from 300cst to 500cst on average (viscosity). You need to heat the HFO up to about 140 degrees, filter, purify, and then inject through fuel valves in the cylinder head. Distillate is only ever flushed through the system when going into layup or drydock, you don't normally change over to Distillate on entry into port. The engines have a piston rod and a con-rod, with a cross-head bearing between the two which slides up and down bearing rails within the crankcase, keeping the piston going in a straight line. Very different engineering to that of standard diesels or petrol engines.
Gas turbines are costly (CAPEX and OPEX), only really found on some cruise ships, destroyers where speed is critical, or space saving is critical. HFO Slow Speed engines are becoming quite efficient and cost effective compared to the refined fuels needed in GTs. Remember you are trying to propel a large mass through the water...you would need quite a few GTs coupled through gearboxes to a drive system which would prove to be cost prohibitive...only really used where the cargo are passengers - minimise vibrations through the superstructure. I have attached a few pics of some the vessels I worked on, the dodgy looking guy in the photos is me.... (PICS: British Harrier, Switchboard, Cape Horn 1&2, Turbo Filter, VLCCx2, HMD Yard british Tenacity building).

The marine pilot that guide that thing into port deserves their money. And I thought driving a HR through Newtown (Syd) was hard...

Don't they have those little joystick things to berth? How surreal would that be, using something like you would use playing PlayStation to park a 400m super freighter. Nuts.
