hey all does anyone know anywhaere where there are some good winding roads which are great fun to drive down..
im in the sydney area... near parramatta but will go a fair bit away.. anywhere near sydney.. cheers, Nat D |

i know you specified near sydney, but if you ever get a chance to, go for a blast along the great ocean road in victoria.

If you get the current FPV Blueprint magazine it had an article about the subject. I think it covered the Bells line road in outer Sydney.

Old Pacific Highway from Cowan heading north right up to the Gosford F3 exit, then turn around and do it all over again! One of my favourite bits of road, dead easy to get to and a ripping drive.
Here's the Datsun with me at the helm, on this stretch of road.  And another one - remember if you drive like a clown, you'll have your very own cross by the side of the road.

cheers.. ive looked into thhat one.. its really dark and hard to see at night.. but in day time looks great..is it good road or really bumpy?

Northern Syd:
1. Bells line of Road (as stated), get to Lithgow then head out to the Jenolan caves. 2. Wiseman's Ferry Road - either cross the ferry and continue up to the central coast (head for gosford) then take the old highway back to Sydney. If you don't take the ferry, head along the Hawksbury back towards Sackville/Pitt Town - about 1.5km of dirt max but the rest of it is a great road wedged between cliffs and the hawksbury. 3. Also consider Putty road from Kurrajong to Singleton(it gets a bit remote). 4. If your willing to drive 800km or so one weekend consider driving up to Glochester via Bucketts way then onto Thunderbolts way to Walcha. Its actually probably better coming from Walcha to Sydney. Southern Syd: Take the Illawarra Highway from/to Moss Vale from/to Albion park through Macquarie Pass National Park. Last edited by Dave_au; 16-08-2005 at 12:51 PM. |

yeah theres heaps of bikey's when i had my l's we got passed on the safety zone on the left hand side of the car.. lol what alaugh mum got a fright and so did i as it went straight past my window...lol

The drive down south to Kiama is nice. It gets much better the further south you go, but I have driven to Batemans Bay and back in a day.

Mmmmm Putty Road! I haven't done that one in way too many years. Wonder if I can manage it one weekend soon?
 Bells Line is my suggestion too as it's a bit of fun with lovely views too. And if you wind down the windows you can hear the bell birds (hence the name). Also, we're going for a cruise soon so join us, should be fun: http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=15433

Bells line of Rd is always fun, and the "old road" (old pacific highway) from Cowan is good too. Just watch out for the locals at Cowan... They're a bit feral! (or so the running joke is anyway)

bah, come to brizzy i'll show you some windy roads you'll never want to stop driving, and im pretty sure there's only 3 lil straights that are no longer then 200m, and this road goes for about 8-9km. its fun, very fun.

Some of my faves in no order.
Putty Road The climb from Yarramundi to Springwood The road from Port Macquarie past Wauhope to ..umm Walcha I think. The road from Mudgee to Lithgow then up Victoria Pass, then across darling causeway and down Bells Line of Rd (funny name.. whats a "line of road") Back road from Lithgow to Bathurst via Sodwalls (nother great name) and Kelso Then there's a 6.1 Km stretch of road just south of Bathurst.... |

For a good short sharp burst try Springwwod Rd @ Hawksbury Heights. Go down the M4 or Great Western Hwy to Penrith, turn right onto Castlereagh Rd and follow for about 17 km's, turn left into Springwood Rd (this part of the road isn't bad either). After about 9 km's you'll come to base of the Blue Mountains, this is where the fun really begins. Like I said, it's short but sharp, rises 100/150+ metres in probably 1.5/2 km's and full of hairpins. Stop at the lookout at the top and back down again (then back up if so inclined). You can either come home via Windsor or continue up and cruise back along the Motorway.

In Vic, the Mount Dandenong tourist drive is great fun but too many tourists!!
The road from Beechworth to Wodonga is a doozy. A reasonably good quality country road with a bit of width and plenty of dips and swoopy turns. Great Ocean Road, as good as it is it's just too crowded.
