Hi Everyone,
This is a probably a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone knows a machinist who'd do small runs of parts (non automotive) here in Melbourne or Aus wide if need be and ship them to me. I need a few delicate things machined within a tolerance of roughly 1/10th of a mm or less. I'm what you'd call a costume armourer (Don't laugh...lol) but I need to submit helmets and armour for approval. This is where the problem lies, machine shops want bulk orders of 500 plus items and if I don't get the license, this is $1000's down the drain and we can't afford it. I know I'm going to be up for set up costs etc because these items have to be accurate, collectors are VERY particular. There are a couple of machinists, one in the U.S and one in the U.K that can do it for me, but I'd rather keep it at home, this is an Australian project and I want the international collectors to be impressed- If I get the license which cost BIG $USD just to apply and that's AFTER the submission of the prototypes, no joke... In some cases I can provide a sample either cast from resin or turned metal, but some will be crude blueprints (drawn by me but to be converted to CAD, I assume). Obviously, if there is someone here in Aus who can help, they will be the supplier if I do get the license and if not, work will come their way from me anyway. Thanks in advance! Cheers, Kraig

Thans very much RG!!!, I didn't honestly expect to even get a response to this, so I very much appreciate it! I'll give them a call. How on earth did you find them? I've searched Google and the Yellow pages and came up blank, maybe I put in the wrong search words?...
Thanks again! Cheers, Kraig

Hi,
We (Argonautica Pty Ltd) use a machine shop in Melbourne for custom one-off designs for the marine industry. They are small operators who like the custom work to fill in time between their existing Clients' orders. They also do all my personal custom machining (hotrod and street car bits...). They also will do the CAD design for you (if required), so basically from design through to completion of the product, and at reasonable rates. PM me for the details if this interests you. Cheers

For realy fancy precision stuff, get it drawn up on cad in 3D then get the parts 'sparked' from a solid block, then polished up. This comes in handy for stuff that cannot be machined on a lathe or mill, and the results are amazing !. cheers.

Thanks HLC and gtfpv, I really do appreciate your help! But I've been lucky enough to have found a machinist here in Melb and having them in the same city will be an advantage.
Now I need to get the drawings done, that's the next challenge. I can't wait to get this rolling though. Thanks again guys! Cheers, Kraig
