The whole NSW restriction to 80km/h is counter productive. The first time you are allowed to drive at faster speeds is just after you pass your test - and are likely to be unaccompanied with no one to assist you in emergency situation.

Sure, there is not a HUGE difference, but there is one. Surely it would be better to be able to give full and proper driving instruction in ALL aspects of driving (incl higher speed freeway/open road driving) situations, rather than just let someone figure it out for themselves once they have proven they can drive around the block and park at low speeds???

The rolling road block is a major safety and traffic management issue in its own right.

Stupid NSW rules. Same as restricting some of the safest cars on a technicality rather than power to weight.

Meh...

I could never ever understand NSW's thinking behind this whole restriction for L and P Platers other than it is a revenue raiser.

Surely young people need to be able to practice ALL types of driving so that they can hone their skills whilst under supervision of an accompanying driver.

Just to add a pondering to this.

Im driving to Melbourne on the weekend in my XR8.

It's my understanding that Victorian P Platers can't drive XR8's

So my question is will i get pulled over in Victoria with my South Australian XR8 with my South Australian Reg Plates and my SA Drivers license????

Technically you should book you, but they probably won't as I have indicated above, they will give some tolerance to those from interstate (except truckies)

This is an interesting point as someone told me (can't remember who) but from what I understand it was that you can get done for going 30km+ under the limit (ie, 70 in a 100 zone)

you can get done for doing 9 ks under the limit here in vic.

you can also get done if you are impeding the flow of traffic

again common sense has to prevail (spelling?)

only if causing some kind of hazzrd or issues for other road users.

Tell me where in the Road Law that is written, and to make your life a little easier to show me, here is the link to the Victorian Government Law site, let me know when you find these little pearls of wisdom.

Law Today

go to Law Today and do a search, you will need to tick the Statutory Rules box at the top, I will give you a tip to start you off, you need to look under R for road.

A guide on either one of your points will be good, but I really really want to see the law that relates to that first one, that is a real pearler.

Bud id be finding out for sure b4 id go above 80 licences are too hard to get at the best of times let alone with any marks against your name
you should only drive at the speed your compitent at and being a learner b careful

im an interstate truck driver i cant stand the hume it even scares me and i knock up over a quater of a million km per year id do what a coupla other blokes have said stick to the back roads and dont run at nite cos thats when all the hill billy overniters run(NOT ALL ARE HILL BILLIES)but a hellavalot r

I am an ex-truckie, and I agree whole heartedly with your second statement. But I would encourage him to drive on the Hume during daylight hours, it is a good experience to do 110km/h.

But as far as your first statement goes, he is safe to go over 80km/h in Victoria on a NSW permit (or licence). He will not be breaking any Victorian law.

To all those who say just call the RTA/VicRoads....Have you actually tried? I went through this over the space of 4 years with both myself and sister. Our regular family trips from Melb to Syd brought up this issue every year and every single person you ask has a different answer. We called both state authorities and no one could give us a definitive yes or no (even changed responses between who you spoke to at the RTA on the same day). We also stopped on two separate occasions at Albury Police station to enquire and could not get a straight answer. The usual response was just a suggestion to stick to 80 although we were told (quietly) by an officer that we were unlikely to be fined if caught as there was/is such wide spread confusion.

I do however believe Big Trev to be technically correct (must follow the road rules of whatever state you're in) but personal belief that one of the biggest dangers on the road is variance in speed not speed itself, never led me to any trouble.

Have to absolutely disagree Tony, the younguns need to be able to concentrate enough to maintain their correct speed for Km's on end and not hunt up or drop down as they lose concentration, I think it is a very important part of learning to drive, not all our kids are going to have cars with cruise control, my kids had all sorts of trouble at first.

Hey turbo_man, make sure when you do the drive you break it up into 2 hour chunks when you write it in the log book because if you don't take a break every two hours, the journey isn't counted. I had a 5 hour drive in my log book but when the driving tester looked at the log book it wasn't counted because I hadn't taken a break, but luckily I had extra hours so I was still above 120hrs.

i was on my (back then, red P's) and drove through nsw all the way to qld, never once had an issue with doing 110kph in a 110kph zone, past, and been overtaken by police cars, guess if they know you're interstate you'd be fine most of the time

but as big kev said, you can drive to the maximum permitted speed in vic, unfortunently that happens to be 110kph... which is a little slow if you're traveling at that speed for a while
