Default Going to look at ED Monty Ghia this Saturday!

I have been an absolute pain in the **** over the last few months, trying to get as much information about purchasing Falcons as possible, but on Saturday, I am going to look at a '94 Cobalt Fairmont Ghia.

It looks good from all angles, and there doesn't appear to be much wrong with it, but I will find out for myself on Saturday.

Hopefully for the last time ever... can I ask: "What do I need to know about Monties?"

This will be my first car (that I have paid for) and so I want to be sure I am spending my hard earned dosh wisely.

I know blown head gaskets and E series go hand in hand, but they were pretty much sorted by the ED wern't they?

Also, it is a factory full leather. Were these that common?

Cheers guys, and I hope I can stop asking questions soon!

Wish me luck!

Mmm, full leather.. buy it. cobalt blue ED ghia.. sounds good.

I think you'll find it took Ford til the AU to sort the head gasket issue so don't ignore this on the ED.
Being full of elec stuff, just check that it all works. Test out the climate control including ambient temp display, play with the trip computer, test all windows, down & then back up. If they fail you can haggle the price down a bit.

Check that all parts of the premium sound are still there (mine was minus the stacker & cable)
CD stacker, AMP & SUB are (or should be) all in the boot.

These were a +$40,000 car once.
Good luck with it.

Yeah she looks like a pretty sexy beast...

They are asking $3 600 for it. Is that about right? I'll knock him down a bit of course, but I just want to know for sure that I am not being ripped off. From what I have gathered, it is about right for a car of this spec and in good nick, but I want to hear it straight from the horses mouth so to speak.

To check for a blown headgasket I think you take off the oil cap and check for a milky residue underneath it. ED Fairmonts are nice, all the best with it if you decide to buy it ;)

EDs are a good choice

You will, of course, post up pix of your new car if you get it!

It's private sale. If it was a dealer I would be bloody cautious...

Yes it's a six. P platers can't handle anymore than that according to the government...

Meeting is set up and all good to go. Should be good. I'll keep you up to date.

Still need to know how to check a leaking head gasket though...

Easy steps to check for head gasket leak.
1. Open bonnet.
2. Look where the block meets the head
3. Does it have a leak?
I mean it aint hard :S

Basically, you have to be happy with car, put all emotion aside, or you will pay big dollars later for your quick purchase.

press every button, open every flap/door etc, look every where for anything wrong, then decide if yo ucan live with it, and try beat the price down with the things you are not 100% happy with.

With engine running, press the floor and off button on the cliamte control, if it gets error E2, thats a dash out job and back and a re-gas of the a/c ($500 easy if not done yourself)

Check the a/c blows cold.

Check the re-circ/fresh is working as well, its in the footwell passenger side (easy fix, but they break often)

have a good look round for rust too,

open the boot and lift the mat there should be the spare tyre under ther and often water can accumulate there so that id be the first place id check,

other than all the electrics, see if you ca go for a drive, listen for any noises in the engine/drivetrain, any vibrations in the steering ect

oh and young 'un most importantly does it come with a roadworthy?
