Hubby and I were just remembering the good old days of letting off some fantastic backyard fireworks. We used to be able to have a ball entertaining ourselves, friends and family (and on many a new years eve, the surrounding neghbours!). It's been years since we had any though, but I hear them going off on the odd weekend from surrounding houses. Just wondering if anybody knows where you can still get the from?? Would love to show the kids (always safely in a clearing with no trees ) what we always took for granted we could enjoy.
Cheers Bec

Canberra. You need to be a resident, and you can only get them at a certain time of the year.
There was a previous thread with more info here: http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthr...ight=fireworks In particular this post: http://www.fordforums.com.au/showpos...19&postcount=7

i remember my best mate spend 1 month in hospital because some smart alec lit one of the many fire crackers in his pocket at the local park.
i was rolling him around in the playground trying to put the fire out, we were 12. they are unlegal and probably not too popular given the fires we had, people will kill if you throw a butt out the window of your car. this thread might be goin bye byes soon... |

Was not actually after hearing everyones stories of irresponsible behaviour. We used to have genuine safe fun in an open area no wind etc, enjoying the firework for what they were not for the damage they could do, fun is no fun when people, pets or property get hurt!

Territory day in the NT was always fun. Man we used to blow up some serious coin, only happened once a year though.
We'd set it up in our front yard on 5 acres. Plenty of room, two people lighting & launching. Never had any major issues, but some people always ruin it for others. More & more talk of calling it off each year. :( |

We bought them for the first time this year. Lots of fun, my young bloke loved it.
The ACT government are reconsidering the law around fireworks after this year. We may have them banned all together. |

We still can have them here in Tassie. But you need a permit, and to get a permit you need to have so much land, be so far from buildings and a couple of other rules, which I can't remember.
My parents have enough land and we have had them for the last three/four years (2 cracker nights and 1 NYE). They are great fun, and bring back so many memories of being a kid having them every year with a big bonfire. There is/was talk of a total ban, but so far that hasn't come to fruition.

They have been banned in the ACT sadly. It was announced today that as of Aug 29 they will be illegal to procure, have posession of and use.
Now its only the NT were anyone can buy them. |

Let off some sunday night actually. I think for about $500 you can get quite a selection. 5 or so 60 shots, some 7 shots, 6 shots and single shots, as well as sparklers. Friends sister is a resident of canberra and we purchased the weekend when they are sold to the public.

No fun at all for the pets that get frightened by the noise.
They set them off around here in the middle of the night for no reason, even when its tinder dry in summertime. People who use them generally have no consideration for others or pets, they should be completely banned. |

It's the irresponsible behaviour that has ruined it for the rest of us. If we still had a dedicated night you could prepare the animals and have the family ready for a great night. You can still get them, you just need to know where to look. For about $120 you can get a big bag full with everything from the good old days. The last ones i got were 300 shot that could be let off to music, lol, probably a bit extreme for most.

The only place I've ever managed to get fireworks from were friends of friends who just happened to have some they got from someone that randomly turned up at a construction site they were working on one day... in short... unless you have a license or live in NT forget it :(
for god sake don't try to make your own, that leads to all sorts of safety issues, hence why I would NOT suggest trying it, I can speak from experience on this one |

As a licensed pyrotechnician i see there are 2 sides to this argument.
On the one hand fireworks are very dangerous and there are many safety benefits to having them operated by a licensed person, under controlled conditions in accordance with a code of regulations and the Dangerouds Goods Explosives Act. On the other hand I understnad those who raise the argument that simple roman candles and the like are, for the most part, resonably safe and can be used in the proper way by non licensed people safely. Unfortunately fireworks used by unlicensed people are normally done in a way that is either unsafe and/or without regard to others around them (noise especially as well as safety distances etc...) so as has been pointed out they are now prohibited from purchase and use in all staes except NT, at certin times of the year I believe. If you have the safety distance a professional fireworks display including a large number of aerial shells etc.. start from $1,000. Safely and legally, however perhaps without some of the do it yourself fun element people may be seking.
