Just wondering what supercharging options are out there and if there is any cheap alternatives?
I know of the CAPA kits. Cheapest one is a bit over 6k. Raptor dont seem to do the AU V8. |

They have a kit for the E series for like $4500... The cart hey tested (for the e series) went from 92rwkw to 189rwkw i think... On a stock EL XR8 with over 200,000kms.... So i expect a great gain for an AU XR8 220kw! |

With a GOOD tune the block can take more. There is a 220kw AU2 XR8 in Brisbane with 355rwkw on a stock block and internals. Runs 12psi from a V2 Vortech and 11.44@122mph, so the blocks are not too weak.

Anything that is in a "complete kit form" is not going to be cheap.
I think if your wanting to bolt on a blower and leave it at that, then the raptor is the way to go, if your likely to get power hungry down the track and want more boost, look at a vortech. The raptor does its limitations, horses for courses really. With the Aussie dollar so damn good I'd bring a Vortech V2 over from the states, and source the other bits and pieces locally, it WILL work out a lot cheaper, although you may still have to buy the bracket from CAPA.. I'd happily aim for the 300rwkw / 400rwhp mark, anything over that is getting into severe block splitting territory. RPM and tune does make a large difference, but once you get to that 300rwkw mark it really does become a ticking timebomb, just check some of the US mustang sites.... But as with everything there are exceptions.. Then again some might be happy to grenade a stock 5L and replace it with another, but having a 15k+ stroker I am not too keen on trying to be an exception :togo:

The other option of course is a Kenne bell kit, I know that BPT are doing them, but definitely not the cheapest option! Just another thing to consider..
Looking at your mods list its about the right time to way up your options for more power, as going NA sadly doesn't have a great result $$ per KW!

Do the 220's have to be decompressed before getting blown?

They will take some boost before needing the compression dropped. I'd say about 12PSI for a stocker, but thats a complete guess..
I dare say you'd need a new block before you'll need to drop the compression..

another vote here for the Raptor kit combined with the w2a intercooler option. Tim from Raptor has been saying that these should be pulling about 250rwkw+ for the v8's combined with the intercooler. (slightly under estimated)

I have a galaxy blue AU XR8 which I have spent megabucks on, first go was
$35,000 which included V2 Vortech S/Charger, custom front mount intercooler, trickflow intake, 45lb injectors, complete upgraded fuel system,AFR Race alloy heads, roller rockers, programable ECU (with data logging same as V8 supercar),Pacemaker ceramic coated headers, twin 2.5in stainless exhaust, bigger throttle body, cold air induction, water injection, custom grind lumpy cam. With 7.5lb of boost car was dyno tuned at 330rwkw / 444rwhp. A change of pulley on the s/charger from 3.1in to 2.75in saw power up to 348rwkw / 479rwhp on 10.5lb of boost. This higher level of boost on a (standard bottom end I can tell you from my own experience, don't do it! 8lb I believe is max for a standard block, pistons etc. Also the gearbox failed after 2000km on the higher boost. So then it was off to Mal Wood at Warwick QLD for new flywheel, twin 10.5in clutch, Viper spec T56 6speed tremec gearbox, 3.5in steel tailshaft, biggest uni joints possible, tailshaft loops, new diff 3.73 ratio which was 50km/h per 1000 revs in 6th gear. The new driveline was $10,500. The rear tyres were now the fuse (weakest link) which was a good thing. Effortless wheelspin if you wanted to when coming onto boost from around 3,500 rpm in 2nd, third, & sometimes 4th gear! Anyhow after 2 or 3,000k the engine would sometimes run on 7 cylinders under load and drop 100 odd rwhp, so I decided to rebuild the engine and stroke to 347 ci while I was at it. Then I found out that the V2 s-trim s/charger airflow was not enough with more cubes and that I need a T-trim V2 or a V7. That was 3 years ago and due to previous budget blowouts first time around the wife wasn't too keen on me spending more on it. I sold the V2 vortech off it, the intercooler is still in the car ( its big enough for a bigger compressor). If anyone is interested in picking up a bargain project car (91000km, 20,000km on engine mods, 10,000km on brand new driveline). Car is registered until mid April 2010, & has new tyres, new brake pads, new slotted rotors, has always been garaged & is in immaculate condition. If interested please reply here or call Paul on 0458263123 for a complete list of parts not mentioned here.Car is up for sale. Thanks. |

Yeah I wont be going that intense thats for sure!
Its no wonder the original T5 blew as they're only rated at 450nm. Barely above the standard 220 engine. |
