They seem to like the VW's. Have seen an undercover Golf and Passat in the last week.

Had a cop chase end a few meters away from me the other night.

A Commodore cruiser
A 360 unmarked
A Tarago unmarked

Like a Tarago.. who'd have though...

Errr, no tickling involved. But urban myths have a way of just never dying.

Too right Sam. I believe the 'cop chip' myth will never die.
Sigh.

That's what I figured.

Here in the States there was a big issue with the Crown Vic cop cars not being able to withstand a 70 MPH crash into the rear of the car. Believe it or not this actually caused fires........of course.

There has never been a law requiring a car to withstand the rare, and usually emergency vehicle only, experience of being rear ended at 70 MPH, but idiots on the highway sometimes slam into a stopped Police car while they are looking at the "pretty lights."

Some lawyers smelled blood, and money, and were getting together a class action lawsuit against Ford for building "such an unsafe vehicle", even though there was no regulation or law requiring such a safety feature, and all other safety regulations were either met or exceded. Ford announced it would no longer provide Police vehicles in the interest of safety of the officers, since their vehicle was so "dangerous." As a result, the case was dropped.

Ford didn't drop it though. After being made aware of so many instances of this happening (I believe 7 of them but don't quote me on that) Ford went ahead and engineered a "Fuel Tank Impact Safety Kit", or something to that affect. This would enable the Crown Vic to withstand an impact of 70 MPH and not catch fire. These were made available to be retro-fitted to any existing Police vehicle, and I believe is an option on new cars. It's up to the city buying the car if they want to spend the extra money, I believe.

This is in addition to all the rest of the Police Package that enables the officers to perform their jobs, pursue and catch criminals, and maintain safety of the officers as much as is possible for the conditions.

But there in Australia they just put them in any old car and say "good luck?"

If that happened in the US the Police Union (unable to strike) would make a big case out of this, and would also recieve the backing of the citizens. People were getting mad at Ford because of the previously described fuel tank issue. Otherwise, it is known that Police vehicles are specially prepared to assure additional safety for the officers.

I think the cop engines here only have about 10 - 15 more HP than the regular production engine, but it has other things that help it idle for extended periods and provide more durability. The officer's training enables him to drive better than the criminal he is pursuing.

It would be nice to know they are driving a car that can take the abuse.

You all seem to forget that if you are pursued in your Ford by one of these things or the Toyotas you will soon shake them off on the bends and roundabouts!

Are the XR's flashtuned for highway patrol work. My XR8 sounds quieter and slower than a police XR8.

i dont think the police should have to have a certain amount of fuel efficient cars because if someone decides to do a runner in his falcon, commodore, WRX how on earth is a lancer or golf going to keep up?

soon they'll start using hwy patrol priuses lol

My Mrs has one as her Company car. I laughed when I heard she was getting one. "Can't they afford the Falcodore any more?!"

Then I drove it.

Yes - they're front wheel drive, but it's well sorted...and what a driveline, lifted from their cousins at Lexus. Smooth, creamy power, mated to an excellent 6-sp auto, and a beautiful cam note when you're giving it to it. And they get better with k's. Hers now has 20k on it and is starting to really boogie now (hope she's not reading this...!)

These are great cars for the money.

Till you hit a corner and the steering and suspension turn to mush, and the un-switchable hyper active ESP kills all the fun.

i'm actually a believer that police should try to avoid chases, esp where speeds get out of control and esp in residential or built up or congested areas. when was the last time you heard of a police chase ending well?

i'll think you'll soon work out the radio is faster than any car ever made. (which is probably also fills another govt request to phase out car chases).

The ones that end well are not newsworthy.

I beg to disagree. I have spent the last few weeks driving around a rental Aurion whilst on holidays. (I specifically requested an XR6, but, the rental company did a swap on me. How typical.) The interesting thing is that my usual ride is a G6E.

Sure, the engine/transmission in the Aurion is a sweet unit. And that is about the extent of it. Regardless how good the drive train actually is, the Aurion cannot make full use of it. Torque steer (in the sample that I am driving) is atrocious. The speedometer is markedly out of calibration (compared to the GPS). Cruise control has a bandwidth that is impractical. Compared with my G6E, the fuel economy in the Aurion is about 2l/100 worst. Most damming, the Aurion does not do corners well. I pity any law enforcement office who has to drive an Aurion, but, I suppose it bets walking.

As for the Qld Police requirements ... I would guess that State Purchasing is putting the weights on them to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions like the rest of government. I agree with the above comments that high speed chasing is something that is only undertaken in exceptional circumstances and the performance of an “interceptor” class vehicle is not usually required.

The AFP uses Mercedes-Benzes...

...but they are vans, for mobile speed cameras in the ACT.

They still own plenty of white and red FG Falcon XTs though, both marked and unmarked.
