Default Towing with my setup.

Hey guys,

How do you think my car would go towing with the mods below?

I bought a 14ft ski boat that I am going down to Sydney to pick up next weekend and I am a little worried about how my car is going to handle it.

It's got plenty of power up top, but low down torque isn't that crash hot. To add insult to injury the car is also a 5spd which makes towing even more limited.
Should I put my stock cam back in or see how it goes with the 1004?

I can't see it being rediculously heavy, but it'd have to be pushing a tonne.

i havn't done much towing myself, but i'd say it would be more than fine. Also from what i've heard 5 speeds are pretty good for towing. I wouldn't worry about it.

it will be absolutley fine mate, wouldnt have a wory at all.
ive towed large cars ( EA sedan, Wagon and EL Fairmont sedan) with my NC with a stock engine and 3.08 SS and it did it fine, only showing a little strain at some pretty steep hills (so you kick it down a couple of gears and go slower lol).
would have to have been pushing 2300kg with the EL easily (hire trailers are around 800kg plus the car).

you'll notice a bit of an increase in fuel consumption. try and cover the boat if it doesnt have a boatcover so you can reduce a bit of drag....
the 5 speed would be better for towing than the auto as you can put the car into a rev range suited for work easier than with an auto

Thanks for that guys! Just wasn't quite sure how it'd go. I've towed a small box trailer with it, but nothing as heavy as a ski boat.

On another note, I now have something else to spend money on! lol. Got a sweet deal on it though!

Ok here's the beast. Ignore the name, it's only a sticker and it's coming off as soon as I pick it up!!

It's a 14ft SwiftCraft Stilletto with a 115hp V4 Evinrude outboard. Bloke that I bought it off has $5000 worth of receipts for stuff that has just been done to it. Engine/gearbox totally rebuilt less than 20hrs ago. Seats just reupholstered, new carpet, new trailer lights/wiring etc etc. Came with 2 ski's, ropes and lifejackets. Picked it up for $4500 because he had to get rid of it due to family commitments. Bloody bargain if you ask me!

Yeah a V8 would have been nice, but a bit impractical and they tend to be a bit unreliable in marine applications.

Respray is definately on the cards, my mate is a panel beater and he's keen to paint it.

I'll pull the name off it and just use it as it for this summer, the probably pull the motor off it and spray it through winter.

You should be right towing with that, but you'll find that the auto's had a higher towing rating from the factory. On that note, towed a heavy car trailer with a heavy old kingswood on it once in a 4 speed XF with no problems.

Nice boat

Nice boat
its commonly known that ford rated the manuals with a lower load towing capacity because of the clutch, not due to transmision load limits.

in other words - ford covered their ***** from stuffed clutches by giving the manuals a lower towing cap.
AUII, you have a upgraded clutch dont you? should be absolutley fine

I reccon towing is one of those things you dont wanna rush. The car will be fine towing, just let it go at its own pace. I prefer an auto to tow with because of the convenience but manuals are probably the better way to go.

I remember when i was a bit younger towing my demolition derby cars to speedway with an HQ holden with a 173 engine and a three speed manual! Ya just ride the clutch a little more sometimes, he he.
