My daughters 2003 Focus intermittently has the Engine warning light come on, and the speedo, tach etc die but the car still runs.
Im hoping someone can tell me whats going on. Sounds like something is loose to me. Assistance is apreciated. Mark.

Any signs of hesitation of the engine when this happens? Like it's going to conk out, but stays alive?

Sounds like the instrument cluster playing up. Common problem with the LR.
The LR owners will be able to tell you more about it. |

Heres another issue. A/C doesnt get blown through the vents on fan speed 1 and 2. When you turn the fan to 3 or 4, the A/C turns off.

Mark, I agree with DZFord and it sounds as though it's an Instrument Cluster. They cost of bomb from Ford Dealers so if you are able to source one from a wrecker, that'd might be the better option.
Out of interest, how many km's has the car done?

Yep, sounds like the cluster. A fault cused by something called "dendrite growth" ....a crystalization that grows in the circuits causing them to "short" ( well something like that)
I searched and searched for months for a fix......but there is none and requires a replacement cluster. It will slowly get worse as time goes on. New one is about $1200 from Ford. Try and find one from a wreckers that's close to your k's. (not easy) I resisted for 18 months, but finally had to buy a new one. (You may be able to get a German one through someone like Fordpartsuk.com, and it will be cheaper but you'll still need to get a Ford Dealer to reset the odometer for you)
