Escort: Suspension/Shocks/Bushes

Hey guys,

Was thinking of doing a bit of an overhaul on the suspension shocks and bushes etc on the escort and was wondering what people recommend and any expert advice!

Was thinking of lowering her about 1.5-2 inches, and looking for shocks/bush kits that won't break the bank (but will do the job)

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

depends what you are looking to do with the car but

for road use - replace ALL bushes with decenet ones - decent shocks, Billy's, Koni's and dont forget the steering rack bushes as well

Not rocket science or that expensive as there aren't that many bushes on the front of an Escort (I would look at replacing the rears as well)

Thanks mate, yeah have just bought a new steering rack (other one was stuffed), would you recommend any online stores or just going to your local auto store (for bushes that is)

I think Yesterford in Melbourne have heaps of bushes for Escorts. I managed to get some rear swaybar bushes from them online after the muppets at Pedders told me they couldn't get them. 1/21 Burgess rd, Bayswater, yesterf@bigpond.net.au, or 03 9761 4714.

Caution : comments by purchasers of some of the cheaper similar products are none too flattering. Check out other web forums e.g. US Capri-list.

At least with an Escort everyone should know what you are talking about...unlike Capri's.
And I would concur, do the lot and save yourself a rework later on.

Escort has :
-rack bushes x2
- sway bar/track rod x2
- inner track rod/crossmember x2
- swaybar/body at front x2
- rear spring F+r bushes 2+2
(plus possibly a rear sway bar)
And check the condition of your strut top bushes (could be ex-y to replace 'tho).

Definitely a DIY job, and then get a wheel alignment.
And...the guys at Yesterford know their stuff (free plug !!)

Mate I bought the full kit from eBay which replaced every single bush on the car inclusive of steering rack for $300.00. Not sure if that was good or bad for price etc but the whole lot landed in my post box and I've changed the lot, also had all the fittinga for the rear leafs..

However, is polyurethane a good option? Some of the guys are quoting for some other something-prene product (can't remember now!), and I'm just wondering what the consensus is here?

Polyurethane is the material, of varying 'shore' hardness ratings for differing purposes.

Brand names include SuperPro, Nolathane, PolyBush, and (some bright orange things from UK on eBay), etc etc. Differing quality and differing prices. Some have stainless crush tubes (e.g. SuperPro) and others anodised steel crush tubes.

I 'm sure this forum, and Yahoo lists would have discussions on various brands.

one thing that im not sure about with that listing is the size of the A/R Bar size.
they say 22mm, whereas all standard Mk2s came with a 20mm ARB/swaybar/stabilizer/whateveryouwannacallit bar.
also all standard bush inserts are mild steel, so dont stress about that factor too much.

i bought a SuperPro kit off ebay few years ago, i do remember seeing them advertised few months ago too, and i can say they are quite good.

I concur with you, std Mk2's had a 19/20mm sway bar while the RS had the larger 22mm

The dollar is pretty good at the moment but I would strongly suggest you get a quote on postage as that can be a real killer and check that the price excludes VAT
