hi
My AU series II steering is making thud noises when i'm driving slow and turning the corner or parking in a carpark. i've been told my steering rack is slightly leaking fluid sometime ago. is it the steering rack or is it another problem? anyhelp would be awesome. thanks SILVA |

Could be your steering rack or the tie rod ends, or even could be your ball joints on the way out

Common problem, I had it. Would only happen at slow speeds.
Tighten your steering rack bolts!!

Have had the same issue and had the upper ball-joints regreased. Ford only charged $40 for it too. It was my cheapest excursion to Ford...

Don drive the car man. Get it cecked first. My steering rack was cactus and arms could have fallen right off when steering..However check the mounting bolts

hey
i Got the steering checked out by a Ford Mechanic. he messed around with the steering wheel and reckons the it's just the bolts in the steering rack are loose and the brushes or something like that need to be regreased. ford will do it for $50. But i checked out Profix, they will do it for $20 which one should i go for? i'm thinking for going for Profix because it's cheaper, but would FORD do a better job ? |

No, Ford generally don't do a better job at all!
While he's looking under your car get him to inspect your sway bar "D" bushes and link pins, they wear pretty fast. My "D" bushes are only 12months old and are rooted! |

You could just do it yourself, takes all of 10 minutes. Other than that, go to profix.

I understood that the checking and retensioning of the steering rack on the AUs is something that the Ford factory has determined that needs to be done on ALL AUs, at the first opportunity.
I took mine in simply for an engine management computer download to check for faults, and they did that steering rack check thing for me, for free! I have to admit though, that was back in March and was the first time my AU has seen the inside of a Ford workshop in the eight years I've owned it. Cheers |

ok i got it fixed by Cliff Auto's they did awsome. it turns out, it was loose bolts , six all up. not sure where but it was near the front middle axle. it looked like there were to main bolts. and then he tightened some other bolts near the arms to the wheels. ( not much of a description sorry) but it's all fixed up and steering is much betta

Wasn't all this the subject of a recall a few years ago? Something about tensioning the bolts and then welding them in place?...
