Default Site slow in evenings?

I know it has been mentioned before but during the evenings AFF seems really slow and sluggish.

Just wondering if this was ever properly fixed or whether its still being looked into, or whether its a permanent affliction (I hope not!)

There are a few factors that affect performance in the evenings. Primarily it is due to user load. If you have a look you'll notice during the evenings there are around 800-900 users browsing the forums, sometimes more. This translates to a lot of requests to the web server and database. During heavy load, requests start to queue as there is a limit to how many requests the existing server can service concurrently.

The solution is what Russell is currently working on, migrating to a new server. Unfortunately it also involves an upgrade to the forum software and also customisations that have been made to the software. That takes time.

Interesting to note that of the 900++ users only half were members.

I'm kinda curious, what bandwidth does AFF have at its disposal? I remember Russel posting figures a while ago regarding how many visitors etc. we get but I can't recall where it was.

It's not necessarily the network bandwidth that is an issue for content websites like this. It comes down to processor speed, number of processors plus disk service times that affect response times in the evening.

I can explain it further if you want me to.

Apart from user load, Russ was (is?) tracking down an issue.
I'm still experiencing spasmodic outtages / hangs at night.

We are (slowly) changing things one at a time to see what is causing it - I have just removed a number of tasks from the hourly cron job as it seems to be something that occurs over about that interval but until we find the cause it is a matter of trial and error.
